Program: Blogging is Nothing to Fear

Speaker: Various

Blogging. Some people can't stop, and others can't get started. Do you know where the word came from? Web Log. Weblog. Blog. Personally, I'm not crazy about the name, but it is here to stay. We even have a blogosphere. So, with that said, this week's program is designed to familiarize you with a few tips on how to get going. You might already blog. If so, add on here with some tips of your own in the forum. Email us, link to your blog, share somehow! If you don't already have your own little literary space on the Internet, hopefully you'll start one soon, or at the very least, understand better why others maintain a blog of their own. Have a great week!

This a good resource for people who are thinking about blogging. I have set up a couple of small blogs for a couple of different reasons. One of them was for the family of a co-worker who suddenly passed away. We set it up so that people could email their stories about him directly to the blog. It has been a great way to share our memories about him and grieve together.

I am a boomer. I have never kept a diary and never will. I also do not blog and never will. I write quite a bit for work, both training/educational materials, letters, documents, and e-mails. I would find blogging as relaxing and fulfilling as a furniture mover whose neighbors asked her or him to come over some night and reposition their living room furniture. Still, if people like to blog, mazel tov. I just hope that the benefits of personal engagement referred to on the second page of this posting are not outweighed by the loss of intimacy and personal relationships that can result from actual human interaction.

20/Jun/09, 5:58pm
Blogging is interesting, but due to the huge volume at times it is difficult to sift through all the possible authors to find those that are appealing to read. On the other hand, a blog that has a defined niche or audience can thrive. For those who use a bloig as a diary of sorts, it might be worth considering occaisionally printing out the content on to hard copy as electronic storage media change over time. Does any one have a new computer that can read a floppy disk from 1985?

Interesting alternative to Rotaryeclubone. I have always thought their programs were too short. Even if I skip the introductory material on your site, the one program I viewed seemed more in-depth, and I appreciated (and followed) the links contained in the program. I am a person who has only blogged a few times. It was for a seminar I was going to attend. At the time, the site was very cumbersome and difficult to navigate. Once the site was updated, it was easier, but I haven't tried since. I should probably embrace technology and the future and try to blog again!

16/Jun/09, 2:07pm
Hmmm . . . I am bemused by the quote that "the majority of bloggers are thought leaders in their field". Since the quote is 3 years old, i will give it credit for having been true at the time. These days, it seems like the majority of bloggers are just maundering about - and not very interesting while they do it. However, it's probably the fault of the blogs that I've read.

Enjoyed the meeting..., I would have probably blogged this one if I was a blogger..., I can see the advantages of blogging, critical info to people in real time, but the main disadvange I see is the inappropriate use of blogging, as it is not regulated in terms of the validity of information.

Interesting, but the assumption here is that everyone wants to communicate with the world and that is certainly not the case, at least for me, anyway. I choose to spend my time doing other things. Perhaps I am the big loser here, but you couldn't provie it by me!

15/Jun/09, 3:17pm
Blogging is an online version of keeping a diary; and it has become very popular around the world. It offers the additional benefit of permitting feedback from readers. Although some host sites have restrictions on "explicit content", blogging offers great freedom of expression. Rotary eClub of the Southwest USA even offers to host bloggers on their site. Blogging is an important vehicle for community opinion leaders, and also as a near immediate source of news and fast breaking events. It's a great way to communicate, easy to begin and maintain; and there is an audience for any subject, point of view or tone. The speaker stresses that blogging is complementary in a significant way to Main Stream Media. Websites are listed which offer tips on blogging. Timely program!

6-15-2009 This presentation on blogging makes several good points. Frankly, I never considered that blogging by individuals or groups could really be considered as a more trusted and transparent source of expert information that the “narcotizing” coverage we get from the mainstream media. Thank you!
