Program: Opportunity Through Entrepreneurship
Speaker: Dr. Francine Hardaway
This week's meeting is by one of our own, Dr. Francine Hardaway. She describes herself as one who has been a member of Rotary, "on and off," for over a decade, but joined our club in June of 2008.
Francine is well-known for the work she does to promote young businesses, and has special insights on the possibilities of entrepreneurship. As an entrepreneur, she built the largest marketing/public relations firm in Phoenix, Arizona before leaving it to join Intel, and now is a founding partner of Stealthmode (http://www.stealthmode.com/), including writing a widely-read blog on its web site. Francine was an Entrepreneurial Fellow at the Berger Center of the Eller School of Business, University of Arizona and has taught entrepreneurship at several Arizona colleges. She makes her home in Phoenix, Arizona and Half Moon Bay, California.
Today you will read about her work to make entrepreneurship an avenue for young people with formidable challenges. Enjoy the program!

I enjoyed the program - Opportunity Through Entrepreneurship. It is always interesting to learn how people find creative ways to do community service. I like that your club features both Rotarian Programs and Others

As President of a small community college in North Carolina, this meeting was of particular interest to me as we have some entrepreneurial initiatives underway with the local school district as well as with a county-wide economic development program. Most timely, interesting, and informative. I will share the link!
Franice, you are to be commended. Great success story.
What a great story of success! Way to go, Francine!

Very good
A very interesting entrepreneurship program. Kudos to all the successes it has fostered.
Because the non-profit organization, BizKidz International, with which I am involved, helps kids at risk develop their entrepreneurial skills, hopefully to break the poverty cycle, Ms. Hardaway's presentation will be very helpful in our work. Thanks.
Rushton did such a great job of taking my materials and making them into a program. Thanks, Rushton!

This was a personable story which I liked very much. Hardaway was a foster parent who saw kids lost in the system -- high school & / or college dropouts -- then trapped in a low wage job. She started OTEF Opportunity Through Entrrepreneurship Foundation. Basically, they are working with at-risk youth and adults to iimprove their livves by creating and growing entrepreneurial ventures. Fantastic program which I am going to pass along to our college who is beginning an entrepreneurship program.
Very interesting program!
I love that she started out helping at risk kids!
Great program and wonderful stories of success. It's amazing how many opportunities there are to make a difference in our community and extend an opportunity to someone less fortunate.
This program has sparked ideas that I will follow up with in the future. With larger numbers of unemployed, at risk citizens we do need to do more to move them to self sufficiency. We are actually doing this in an ongoing mission that we have in Peru.

What interesting programs! It is exciting to see successes such as these, especially in the rough economic times of today. It sounds like these programs are achieving two great outcomes: building successful businesses and heloing at-risk individuals move forward into a productive life. Good job!
As a retired judge, working with a lot of the same clients OTEF has, I think this is a marvelous idea.

Very Impressive. Tends to make one feel they are not doing enough to change the world when listening to what others are doing to make positive changes in Americas under privileged.
"jobs" are a myth unless you live under socialism. I believe self-sufficiency comes through entrepreneurship in vibrant communities where people help each other build businesses."
I couldn’t agree more!
Best, Brett
I thought the discussions of the speaker were terrific. Teaching others to succeed at new entrepreneurial business is a great way to help people get ahead and succeed.

Excellent ideas for combatting the problem of young people in pa=rticular who are unable to find opportuites to se=ucceed due to their past.
Enjoyed the Sergeant of Arms report, very much. The program provided got me excited as I live in AZ and believe we should teach entrepreneurship as a required course in schools. Next year, I'll be attending the conference and bringing students with me! The photos of students working personalized the presentation and the meeting. thank you.
An inspiring program. Appreciate this "medium" for making up meetings.

Enjoy reading "President's Corner" and 'Opportunity Thruogh Entrepreneurship".
The Opportunity Through Entrepreneurship Foundation (OTEF) was founded in 2006 by Francine Hardaway for the purpose of teaching "former foster kids, returning felons, domestic violence victims, teen runaways" how to become entrepreneurs. As Hardaway says, "Because in all my travels globally, I've come to the conclusion that 'jobs' are a myth unless you live under socialism". Therefore, OTEF instructs at-risk youth and adults how to become self-sufficient by starting and maintaining their own businesses; in other words, employment through self-employment. To this end, OTEF has worked with the Arizona Entrepreneurship Conference in fund-raising; with SEEDS House to help women in a domestic violence shelter "brainstorm" business ideas, create a business plan and start a business; with Tumbleweed, a program for youth runaways, to help them expand their existing ventures; and to provide skills training for Tumbleweed's refugee program. Last spring, OTEF developed a program called Blueprint for Survival, based upon a Kaufman Foundation template, to train the newly unemployed the fundamentals for planning and building their own business. Great project; excellent program!
What a worthwhile organization. It is wonderful to know that people who have used their intellect and talents in ways that have had a negative influence on their lives can be in an endeavor that uses these same talents to give their lives meaning and change them for the better.

This is a a wonderful program. I will take it to some people who may be able to replicate it in Oregon. They have a program in place to help the hoemless and underprivileged children in the Canby School Dristirict and the Children's Services for the State is so impressed with the program that they are wanting to duplicate it--this would be a great piece to add.

The entrepreneual ideas are very exciting. It appears people have a vested interested in their own project and if the work can support them and their family, they will
increase their self esteem.
Great Work Francine!!...you are truly an inspiration, and are changing the lives of many deserving people! Keep up the good work.
Very nice to see the BOD report. That's a fine way to connect us. Good comments from all, making an enjoyable meeting. Help for entrepreneurs is something I never had. I thought being an entrepreneur meant forging ahead in the darkness. Thanks be to God, I'm now a no body and nothing to learn. (When will that ever happen?)
