Program: Digital Stories - Part 2

Speaker: Rushton Hurley

Our Internet Communication Chair, Rushton Hurley, travels around the United States helping teachers to use multimedia and online tools to help better engage their students in their learning. This week, he expands on his previous presentation, and takes a shot at teaching us how to use simple but powerful audio recording program to tell the stories of what we do as we serve our communities.

Yo - Rushton.  Vorbis is an encoding format for audio files and an Ogg is a container in which such files are contained.  Such as the file "ImPullingYourLeg.ogg".  Only I'm not.  As a 30-year software professional, I am continually astounded by the wide range of things I don't know. Ah, well. Very informative, not to say eruditie.

This visit was prompted by discussion on a draft resolution to the Council on Legislation in relation to E-Clubs etc.  One of our members suggested this would never apply to our club in Hokitika NZ. Others said yes it would for a variety of reasons. When I saw a comment via the Rotary group on LinkedIn I thought I would attend a meeting!!

Enjoyed the messages - reminds ourselves as to why we are Rotarians.

All the best.

08/Feb/10, 4:35pm

Rushton does it again. His last digital program featured Movie Maker software and was equally fun and instructive. This go round, Audacity audio software is featured. In simple progressive steps, Rushton leads us from download to execution, adding links and photos along the way. Audacity gives us digital recording options which lead to interesting possibilities, such as having our "grandfather telling the stories he used to tell". What could be more meaningful than that? Service Above Self is our ever worthy goal; but it does not, nor should it ever, nullify Service To Self. Rushton introduces us to the Audacity to serve both. Good program!

Digital Stories Part 2 was difficult. Now that I went back to view Dicital Stories Part 1, I feel not as tech-impared. This is a clear tutorial. Now if I can find a teenager to assist, I just might be able to use it!

This was a very interesting discourse on digital programs. However, having had a laryngectomy, the Audacity program would not be possible for me.

I found the article filled with cool ideas about how to improve what I do normally. Most of all, I love the mix of data and a sense of humor. We need more reason to smile in today's world.

Couple of notes: to learn more about Arch Klumph and what eventually became TRF visit http://www.rotaryfirst100.org/presidents/1916klumph/

He was president in 1916. 1913 was Russ Greiner. RGHF is a great source for all of the Global History of Rotary http://www.rghf.org

Lastly a personal note on donation to TRF. Several times I was given "points" by clubs and individuals that promoted me up the ladder with rubies and other gems. But when I decided to become a major donor (10K is the first level) I found that the points don't count and had to come up with the cash. The rub was that I didn't ask my spouse/partner when I spend the several thousand to reach that level. Every year we get invited to several major donor events and I'm reminded that she did not contribute willingly. My wife is an angel, this is not a reflection on her, but my suggestion that you don't make my mistake.

As for Rushton (ain't he a bright fellow?) my career was audio, film, and then video with my own production company in San Francisco, but for the life of me, I can't figure out the technologies of today's media. I've got awards for video, but can't manage to create a bleeping sound on my computer. God Bless Rushton and all the young folks of today.
