One more remembrance of my evening at the Hyatt Regency with Rotary/One and their guest on February 23, 2010: It all started with fellowship in a portion of the ballroom where the Navy band was playing. At a given point, all were called to the large window, facing the Wrigley Building, with Jesse Jackson, Gov. Ed Quinn, RI Executive Director Ed Futa and other dignitaries hold a symbolic switch on a make-shift stage. At the given moment, after a count down, the switch was pulled, the sign "Stop Polio Now" was lighted on the side of the Wrigley Building, and we all went back to the fellolwship that led to a special dinner and the speeches.
It was only later, seeing all the photographs of the other lighted places across the world, did I and many others feel the importance of this symbolic moment. The mission of stopping Polio is almost here. Wow! Of course, we still have poverty, illiteracy, war and other things to end. What I felt was that these, too, might be possible. It was a special evening.
