Program: A Speech to Rotary/One

Speaker: Joe Kagle

The great Blaise Pascal once said something like, "I made this letter very long, because I did not have the leisure to make it shorter."  Perhaps our great Joe Kagle, in true Texas spirit, questions whether minimizing quantity is the best path to anything.

Joe introduces us to the talk he gave in Chicago last week with a look at what it takes to take on writing a speech for such an occasion.  Those of us who have had the pleasure of talking with Joe know that what he lacks in brevity, he more than makes up in humor and philosophical insight.  He is one who has inspired students of art and art history for decades, and I encourage you to sit in his class again today and enjoy his thoughts and words.

I'm also proud of the work we do every day, in so many diverse ways, to better people lives, to provide clean water and basic sanitation, to repair homes of the elderly or the dispossessed, Intervene surgically sick heart children to give them a better way of life, to respond to human needs in the face of disaster And above all immediately end polio.

Welcome to E-Club Roberto!!!

07/Mar/10, 6:47pm

I always enjoy hearing about what Rotary is up to, past and present.

07/Mar/10, 6:30pm

It was interesting to read how much trouble Joe Kagle had in writing a speech that could encompass all of the accomplishments of Rotary and trying to narrow down 2 extraordinary leaders of Rotary. That must have been quite a challenge!!

07/Mar/10, 5:36pm

Joe, that fact that you could pare down a 27 minute speech to less than 5 minutes inspires me, because I happen to know that that would have to be an extremely difficult task for you. Sometime sthe little things inspire us as much as the bigg stuff.

I enjoyed the meeting very much. It was inspirational, thought provoking and very informative. I also found the hints for organizing a brief, but effective speech to be very helpful. As Rotarians we are so fortunate to be able to reach out and learn from our fellow like-minded Rotarians. Thanks.

The "Inspirational Thought" is quite to the contrary.  If there were no religion, as John Lennon wanted, the world would be in much worse shape.  If there were no heaven, we would have nothing to live for and be no better than a dog.

05/Mar/10, 4:07pm

I am still having trouble with your pdf files.  Message says they are damaged.  Help!

05/Mar/10, 4:02pm

This was my first time on an eclub and I will do it again!

05/Mar/10, 1:35pm

Congratulations for the program Joe. All the members of the “Monterrey branch” of Recswusa are very proud that we originally belonged to the Dr. Carlos Canseco club in Monterrey and we had the chance to help him in the beginning of the vaccination campaign in Mexico and in the world. He was my mentor when I joined Rotary in Morelia Michoacan, Mexico1983-1984 and he gave me the welcome in his club in Monterrey in 2002

05/Mar/10, 11:49am

Thanks for the reminder that each one of us doing projects is what makes Rotary "tick".

05/Mar/10, 10:58am

04/Mar/10, 4:20pm

I have no doubt that Polio will soon be gone from the planet.  That so many countries already are free of this dreadful disease, is proof that it can be done.  It WILL be done!!!

04/Mar/10, 4:17pm

I very much enjoyed this program and the President's Letter. Both underscore the role of the individual in a community dedicated to achievement. The world will not change because of governments, elected or otherwise, but through the efforts of Rotarians in fact and in heart.

105 years seems like a long time, yet historically, just a flash in the pan. The accomplishments of Rotary to date continue to impress those with both a short and long view of time. I can only imagine what the next 105 years will bring through the continuing concept of "service above self"...

Joe always does a great job. And, yes, sometimes it takes a lot of words to really get a point across. I was truly touched immensely by the "End Polio Now" lights on buidings and monuments around the world. Joe's program once more makes me so proud to say, "I am a Rotarian!" What great fun to be at Rotary One on our anniversary.

I enjoyed today's meeting which for me included Joe Kagle, "Not that's an e-club" and "upcoming council on Legislation.  I gained insights from each.

01/Mar/10, 5:55pm

Speaker Joe Kagle presents a double feature in this program. He precedes the transcript of his February 23, 2010 speech to the Rotary Club of Chicago (Rotary's oldest club) with an overview of the process he followed to create the speech. The speech preparation steps were: self-examination, review of personally successful systems, obtaining assistance from others, formulating an "interesting" concept, relying on one's personal communication experience and focusing on the message. Kagle then developed his theme from a series of questions, answered in terms of Rotary history, which were molded into vivid analogies to enhance audience appeal. The resulting speech is a pithy, informative, entertaining retrospective of Rotary's 105 year history, which also salutes Rotary/One (Rotary Club of Chicago) for doing "something grand" in starting what has become an incomparable world leader in non-profit civic service and contribution. We all salute Rotary/One for being the "First Penguin" of Rotary!

Joe, you made us proud in Chicago!

01/Mar/10, 6:32am

One more remembrance of my evening at the Hyatt Regency with Rotary/One and their guest on February 23, 2010: It all started with fellowship in a portion of the ballroom where the Navy band was playing. At a given point, all were called to the large window, facing the Wrigley Building, with Jesse Jackson, Gov. Ed Quinn, RI Executive Director Ed Futa and other dignitaries hold a symbolic switch on a make-shift stage. At the given moment, after a count down, the switch was pulled, the sign "Stop Polio Now" was lighted on the side of the Wrigley Building, and we all went back to the fellolwship that led to a special dinner and the speeches.

It was only later, seeing all the photographs of the other lighted places across the world, did I and many others feel the importance of this symbolic moment. The mission of stopping Polio is almost here. Wow! Of course, we still have poverty, illiteracy, war and other things to end. What I felt was that these, too, might be possible. It was a special evening.

01/Mar/10, 5:45am

you did well Joe
