Program: A Pinch of Salt

Speaker: Dr. Vimal Hemani

Dr. Vimal Hemani is our Service Project Chair this year. Last week he journeyed to the Little Desert of Guajart, India to see the beginnings of our windmill that benefits the salt workers there.

Vimal tells the story better than I do, so without further ado, I present Vimal Hemani, and "A Pinch of Salt".

I am excited about the followship matching program that your club has!  Great to hear about the earthquake fund.

21/Apr/10, 7:02pm

Very well done.  Being a salt lover I learned how salt is harvested to bring a small income to salt workers in the Little Desert of Guajart, India.  Thanks for wonderful program and sharing your beneficial windmill project.

21/Apr/10, 2:41pm

Excellent program and example of what a small group of people can accomplish when we work together!  Thanks for the information and the example of the eClub in action!

19/Apr/10, 9:18am

What an uplifting story about how Rotarians helped these very needy people.  Thank you for sharing it with me.

18/Apr/10, 7:46pm

This was very interesting.  I did not know how salt was produced in this region of the country.  These are the international projects that cost so little to do and yet give such large rewards to the local population.

12/Apr/10, 9:41am

I love the idea of developing leadership opportunities for kids.  This is a wonderful program you are developing.

12/Apr/10, 9:30am

This is a great way to stay in touch with a Rotary meeting, to use the time thinking Rotary rather than useless travel time.

Thanks - Martin

04/Apr/10, 12:58pm

Congratulations Dr, Vimal: This kind of programs are the best sample of “Rotay” reason to be, and all around the world the people that works in salt mines or obtaining salt from the seas are some of the poorest people of the world, which is a contradiction because as you know salt was so appreciate that roman soldiers were paid with salt, and that is why what the retribution for the job is a salary.

02/Apr/10, 10:58am

Very interesting documentary, I will have a much higher respect for it when shaking salt on my food, and realize how happy those people are for having a job even if it's living the simple life with the bare necessities.

Pinch of salt missed telling exactly what the wind mill, instead of the the 5 h p motor do? Do they pump water out of the salt beds?

I too was unable to down load first day i tried

3-26-2010The windmill project to benefit the salt workers of the Little Rann area of Gujarat, India is a great idea. The fact that this single installation of 10 basic windmills could reduce the cost of production by 55% is astounding. Congratulations on a wonderful service project that will pay dividends to these hardworking Indian families year after year!

This is a wonderful project and shows the global reach of our E-Club (and how all of us can make a difference for people in need worldwide which translates to local service). Thank you for sharing this information and the images about the 'windmill project'. Once a pilot project like this is demonstrated, it can be duplicated anywhere that there is constant wind and innovative local efforts to give service.

15/Mar/10, 4:38pm

Rotary does it again - this time with windmills! Harvesting salt in India is a very labor intensive industry with the work concentrated in deserts. In the Little Rann desert of Gujarat over 30% of India's total salt production is generated by "small and marginal pan workers". There are over 19,000 such families, representing 40,000 pan workers, producing about 800 tons of salt per family when working the full September to March season. Enter Rotary, which raised the funds to provide 10 windmill pumps which now provide continuos low cost salt water pumping. These new pumps save tremendous time, money and are more efficient than the previous pumping methods, which were slow, used expensive diesel and were more prone to breakdown. Another wonderful, and creative, Rotary project!

A mentoring program is always great. My son is a Big Brother with Big Brothers and Sisters. He finds joy every time he meets with his little brother. Your club of 17 is much like our club of Rio Rico. Small but full of enthusiasm. Keep up the good work. I am a Rotarian since 1977, son of a DG and I enjoyed being assistant Governor two times.
