Program: The Shoebox Project

Speaker: Bill Smale
Having the opportunity to see the smiles of children and the thanks of those in need is one special component of participating actively in a Rotary project. A member of the Rotary eClub of the Southwest USA, Bill Smale, was able to see much of the evolution of a project that developed out of friendships and a genuine interest in others. Sit back and enjoy Bill's story of kids, food, and friendship!

Thank “God” Rotary exist and is an international good will organization... I ask my self why not being a Rotarian is the first condition to become a politician? We would have reached the peace long time ago and this world would be a better place to live for all of us.
“Guillermo for President” or Governor to start.
Great program, great meeting. Much to be proud of Larry!
Love that project! As a charter member of the club, I've been rather lax about club fellowship (bizzy, bizzy, bizzy) but am resolving to comment on more programs so you all know I haven't fallen off the planet.
I love this sort of project not only because it directly benefits some deserving people but also because its side effects are amazing. I am really proud to be a Rotarian!
International Peace and Understanding!!!! Such projects as the Shoebox Project are perfect examples of how Rotary works toward this end.
wow what a great project...congratulations on your continued success
So much can be gained not only for the Rotarians and recipients, but also the friendships that develop along the way.

Enjoyed Maureen's humor. Vegas is always enticing, maybe more so now :). Lived in Vegas once upon a time and we had plenty of company. Bill, great work on the shoebox project. Sounds very fullfilling and fun. A great combo.
Sounds like a blast, Bill. If the rest of the world knew how much FUN these projects are, they'd be beating down our doors to join our club. (Oh, that's right, they already are!) Thanks for a fun program.
Thank you again for allowing me to participate.
Excellent and inspirational program!

Stories such as this constantly remind me of what Rotary is all about. To be part of the service projects Rotarians take on and often without recognition, reinforces the conviction joining Rotary almost 20 years ago one of the best decisions of my life.

it was good to know all the projects that the club is doing. Its incredible that with members all arround the world it can be done. Congratulations.
Just correcting a typo that appeared on my installation message. The Rotary Rose Parade Float Committee uses almost 1000 not 100 volunteers. OOOPPPPSSSS!

Congratulations to your newest member. When I read Maureen's introduction I had to laugh because her father reminds me of my father. I too am a third generation Rotarian and my dad currently has about 55 years perfect attendance! Every vacation we took involved stopping along the way to make up a Rotary meeting. I always wondered what he did at those meetings that women weren't allowed to attend ;-)
Great meeting. Quick question for you...
I am a member of a local rotary club, but travel pretty much nonstop. Is it possible to join the E-Club exclusively or do I need to maintain a local club affiliation as well?
Take care - Martin Fox

Maureen,
Great to hear your background! I'm also from CA (Laguna Niguel) and am heavily involved with the Am. Heart Association. We just held our 1st Annual Ace of Hearts Tennis Tournament which was a great success considering it was Superbowl weekend (we're an hour away from New Orleans) and deep in Mardi Gras season. Keep up the good work1

Love the idea of the shoebox project it could be used locally as well.
An interesting and worthwhile project. I believe that a project such as this one is very important to Rotary because it allows great visibility for clubs in the U.S. and Mexico. The idea of killing "two birds with one stone" was very appropriate. In fact, it also helped Target and some other stores in the U.S. and benefited the U.S. economy. Good job!

Bill "Guillermo" Smale's program introduces us to a Rotary Shoebox Project created to deliver gifts to poor Mexican children on the occasion of the Day of the Three Kings. The gifts are wrapped before the box top is placed back atop the box so as to ease custom inspections. This initial project effort was so successful in Nogales that a subsequent project was begun for children in Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point). This second project was facilitated through the mutual assistance of the Maricopa, Arizona, and Rocky Point fire departments. The number of children served has grown significantly. One point Smale repeatedly makes is the personal satisfaction and sincere enjoyment each participant, be it Rotarian or fireman, gets from the project. He concludes the program thusly: "It turns out building goodwill and friendships through Rotary projects is a lot of FUN!" This, of course, is the poorest kept secret in the Rotary universe. Great program.

Very much enjoyed reading Maureen's story, and the shoebox project
I especially liked the meaningful poem and other thoughts. The shoebox project sounds like a terrific program.
How many children have been made happy with these shoebox gifts! A heartwarming story.
Thanks Bill. This is a great program.
There is literally no end to what one can do to make the world a better place. What a wonderful and satisfying project. I'm positive the giver gets much more than the receiver here! Guillermo...this is Guillermo! I love that!
This was the first time I used the e-format because i was unable to attend any meetings last week. I really enjoyed seeing what other groups are doing and truly enjoyed the "attitude" check.
