Program: Rotary Youth Leadership Awards

Speaker:

This Week's Program will focus on Rotary Youth Leadership Award Camp - RYLA - that will be held in Heber AZ Thursday, April 29th through Sunday May 2nd. Our eClub program is sponsoring two outstanding young people to RYLA this year -- you'll have a chance to meet them in a couple weeks.

At RYLA, students are divided into teams and given a community, regional or global problem to solve using a team approach. This resolution is presented on Sunday morning as a skit. There will be a high & low wire challenge course, lectures & problem solving group activities. All eClub members are invited to attend even for just part of a day. Please email Pam Cohen to let her know you are coming.

RYLA really does build leadership skills in our youth, while building their self confidence.

I liked your format.  I truly felt like I was at a meeting.  I enjoyed your program on RYLA and will look into similar programs in my area.

RYLA is a fab program - both my kids did it and loved it.

This would be something that could also be used in companies to bring employees and employers together.

02/May/10, 6:18am

RYLA is quite a growing experience for the volunteers as well: I was lucky enough to volunteer at the District 5510 RYLA for a couple of years.

30/Apr/10, 8:52am

Great program (I just attended the 4/19 one on RYLA)!  As Rotarians, we have the opportunity to help young people understand their ability to see themselves in new ways as well as become young leaders in their communities.

30/Apr/10, 7:30am

RYLA is probably the Rotary program I've know least about since becoming a Rotarian.  Thanks for a very informative program.

29/Apr/10, 11:21pm

There is nothing more rewarding than to see these youth excel and grow up to be productive adults.

28/Apr/10, 6:43pm

We have our Interact students presenting their RYLA experience at our next meeting. It will be great to hear about what they got out of the event and to see how it compares to this one.

24/Apr/10, 3:57pm

Very Interesting!  I was especially interested to see information about Monterry Mexico where I lived in 1980s.

I also enjoyed learning how another District does RYLA.

24/Apr/10, 10:52am

I have managed 2 years of the RYLA program at the Maricopa, AZ club and found it to be an invaluable and, once started, an indispensable part of the clubs future.  These kids learn so much about leadership that everything after that tends to make "more sense" and has a better chance to "catch" and help them become more effective leaders.

Great meeting throughout, from the president's remarks to the program.

RYLA was a tri-district event in AZ until 1996 when the decision was made to go independently by district. Each district has its own unique elements but a commonality of purpose has kept all three programs at a high level of achievement.

I enjoyed reading the program on the Rotary Youth Leadership Award Camp.  I've heard about other Rotary youth leadership programs (we have one in our District) but I was intrigued by the emphasis on cross cultural understanding  and appreciation. That has traditionally not be an emphasis that our District has included in its youth leadership program but one that I will pass along through our Club President.

It's always interesting to read about what other Clubs are doing relative to fundraising, projects, etc.  Thanks for providing us virtual Rotarians the opportunity to share in your Club.

I enjoyed the story about Father O'Malley.   Glad to learn abour the RYLA.

Most interested about the Rotarians from Monterrey joining on-line meetings.  I know the Garza family that owns the glass factory in Monterrey.

Thank you for the opportunity to continue learning.

22/Apr/10, 7:22am

This program was very good in explaining some of the nuts and bolts of RYLA.  I had not heard of Bafa Bafa before.  In a little different format, it might make for a good focus of a terra club weekly meeting.

It is our good fortune that we have been able to welcome so many Mexico City Rotarians.  (Unfortunately, that was at the expense of other clubs.)  Is it now time for our club to sponsor an English-speaking, spanish-speaking or bi-lingual Mexico City Rotary Club.

RYLA is such a worthwhile program.  Maybe we need to better organize to more fully utilize RYLA as a source of young Rotarians.

As a "younger" Rotarian, I think it is imperative to instill leadership in todays youth.  As the father to a young daughter, I look forward to the day that shebe able to participate in such a program!

Very infomative about how the eclub works.  It has never been clear to me, and only now are things getting more clear.  I've been attending your meetings off and on for several months.  I am well pleased that you are growing.  Best luck to you.

20/Apr/10, 2:30pm

I will never forget my experience at RYLA both as a DGE and a DG. Watching these kids grow before your eyes is wonderful. Later my granddaughter attended a RYLA weekend. (This is one of the few programs in which children and grandchildren of Rotarians can participate.) She said it was "life changing" for her. She even went to the prom with a Youth Exchange young man.

your club has some great programs and have given me ideas on how my club can expand our reach.  My club has a Christmas meal with the members of a senior citizens home and sing carols with them.  we also have a Christmas party with underpriviledge children at a McDonald with an appearance from Santa and other local entertainment that the kids would enjoy.

This week's program provides a very descriptive review of the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program based upon the speaker's enjoyable experiences with the District 5490 program. "RYLA is an intensive training program for community youth leaders" which originated in 1960 in Australia; and later became an international program of Rotary in 1971. The program is designed to bolster youth development, particularly youth leaders, through encouragement, training and recognition - with emphasis on leadership themes of: ethics, communications, problem-solving, self-esteem and citzenship. The typical weekend format divides participants into teams, which are then challenged with group and individual tasks. Social interaction and skits, inspirational speakers and reflection upon societal needs and solutions add to a "life changing" experience for many of Rotary's, and the world's, future leaders. Excellent program!

At my former Rotary club Maryborough , Victoria, Australia,

I had the privilege ,toattend two RYLA weekends, wonderful to see how some of the  young people developed over that weekend.

Similar comments to yours had been made from there parents.

Well done Australia for the Rotary Idea.

We send young people to RYLA from our club each year. I've never attended myself, but I hope to do so when my name reaches the top of the volunteer list!

I really appreciate the Eclub for it's ability to allow me to continue to be involved in Rotary in those times when I cannot make my regular club meeting.  It is wonderful to hear about projects that other clubs are doing and looking to see if any of those projects could be taken up by our club as well.  Thanks for the great work you do Eclub!

RYLArians are a very important part of Rotary´s future.  This is an excellent program which highlights the most important aspects of the RYLA programs.  Good work!

19/Apr/10, 11:09am

I learned that RYLA in some Districts is not just for juniors in HS.  I was a facilitator for RYLA in Dt. 5300 and had 8 kids in my charge.  I learned way more than they did and still have fond memories of them all!

I like your site.  I found it interesting.  This is the first eClub site that I encountered that had a "meeting".  There was also a great deal of useful information included.  I think your Work Group concept is also very good.  Keep up the great work and congratulations on your contributions to the Foundation.  Your club should take great pride in it.
