Program: A Walk in the Desert

Speaker: Karen Naranjo

Have you been working all day at your computer?  If so, it's clearly time to get outside.  Get ready for a beautiful hike through the Arizona desert courtesy of Karen Naranjo, who has been with our club since 2004.  Karen lives in the Phoenix area and will guide us through the land and flowers of her 'hood, aptly named "Paradise Valley."

NOTE: This is a somewhat larger file than usual, since we've got lots of wonderful photos in it. Please be patient while it downloads.

Here's a bit of trivia about the Sonoran desert: it has the greatest variety of plant life of any desert on the planet. So many people think of deserts as boring with few plants, not the Sonoran! It is truly beautiful at almost any time of year.

I enjoyed the program by Karen Naranjo and the beauty of the desert in the Arizona area.

Sounds like a busy club with all the projects that the members are involved with.

Nice to have your 7 members from Monterey, this is definitely an advantage of an eClub.

The president spoke about the eClubs possibly ending on June 30, however they became a permanent part of RI on April 26 by  a vote of approval of the Council of Legislation.

I also enjoyed the sneak peek at the RI float that will be in the Rose Parade in Pasadena on New Years Day.

Beautiful program Karen. Arizona is a multifaceted environment. Many of us love the beauty, quietness & serenity of the desert and Karen has shown us why. She does have a beautiful home and yard. Mel and I live in the mountains at 6500 ft, a 3 hours drive north of Phoenix and the desert. It also has those tranquil qualities. We are still experiencing the quietness of snow. :0)

I am so excited about the COL voting last Monday. It is such a calculated risk to charter a club such as this one, but one that must be made. Thank you to all the Rotarians....those who are still with us and those who have moved on....who made it happen. It was worth the effort, Judy

In the 30+ years I lived in Colorado, I visited Arizona many times, but never in the Spring.  Thanks, Karen, for the wonderful flower tour.  I was always faxcinated by the tiny, almost microscopic, wildflowers that bloomed on the high mountain meadows in Summer.  I'm sure everyone enjoyed seeing the beautiful Sonoran desert.

4-29-2010Karen Naranjo’s “A Walk in the Desert” is actually a beautiful guidebook that visitors to various part of the Sonoran desert should carry with them on paper or electronically. She’s provided a wealth of information about the weather and flora of this great desert region and flavored her commentary with enough personal perspectives to make the whole experience more like a walk with a friend than a mere catalog of points of interest. Thank you, Brooks C. Sackett

Congratulation to all,

All the members of the “Monterrey Group” invited and leaded by Raul Herrera  that met Frank Longoria in a Rotary Conference of the 4130 District, invited all of us to join this E-Club, as new members we didn’t knew who, were, when and how? This kind of Rotary Club was born and now how is growing and consolidating.

So “Honor who Honor Deserves”, to you Larry and all the Rotarians that after 100 year are updating this wonderful association.

In the name of all the members of the “Monterrey Group” we want to congratulate all of you and all of us for what happened today.

 Yours in Service Without Borders.

Thanks Karen for this tour and the wonderful pictures

26/Apr/10, 4:47pm

How wonderful for one of our members to show other members who live around the world how beautiful our Sonoran desert really is. There are still people who think the Arizona desert is nothing but sand dunes. My son owns a jeep touring company, and I had the pleasure of touring a wonderful, quiet area of our desert a week ago. It was in full bloom and there was scarcely a bare spot of ground without some kind of growth. Thanks, Karen!

26/Apr/10, 4:13pm

Our speaker Karen Naranjo gives us a fascinating and colorful tour of the beautiful flora in the Sonoran Desert, the largest of North America's four deserts. Receiving only six inches of average annual rainfall, the Sonoran has neverthe less spawned a wonderful array of plants, such as the Triangle Bur Ragweed, the Desert Wishbone Bush, a remarkable diversity of beautiful flowers and the "famous Saguaro cactus", the latter which can live 150 years and weigh up to ten tons. The Sonoran is also home to the South Mountain Preserve, reputedly "North America's largest municipal park". Online Rotarians know that the Sonoran's greatest flower is the Rotary E-Club of the Southwest USA, which was born amidst all this natural beauty. Excellent program!

eClubs are definitely a lifesaver for Rotarians who are frequently traveling.  I have visited several sites and have found yours to be one of the most informational.

It was definitely refreshing and encouraging to hear about the smaller "micro clubs" that doing wonderful deeds in the name of and have joined forces with your Rotary Club.  While we cannot all make a weekly meeting; it's great to be able to communicate with fellow Rotarians on their efforts to make the world a better place.  Thanks!

This is my first visit and as a new member or rotary and as a business owner I can say that I hope the e meeting continues to be available for "make up".  Committing to a once a week meeting is huge, if we can't make a meeting we need a quick easy way to make up for it.  When time is scarce but our committment to the club remains we need an option.

Hi

Just wonder if there is any other way to contribute other than paypal or cheque? VISA would be nice - for those of us who live in cpountries where paypal does not set up accounts and cheques to the USA would take forever to mail and forever to clear.

Otherwise this was a grest program as always - I feel as if I took a short holiday in Paradise Valley - and as I am preparing for a stresful meeting - that was great.

I am also excited by working groups - as I mentioned there are many former rotaract club members who have not joined rotary in kenya and we could form our working group here!

Have a nice week everyone

Regards

Elizabeth
