Program: Bernal - Town of Mystery

Speaker: Carlos Garcia Calzada
Carlos Garcia Calzada has been a Rotarian for almost twelve years, serving the Rotary Clubs of Acapulco, Vallarta Centro, and Vallarta Sur before joining the Rotary eClub of the Southwest USA. Carlos keeps busy with his work as an architect, and as a lover of photography, astronomy, wine, and learning, all of which find expression in his presentation today on his hometown of Bernal, Querétaro, Mexico.
Bernal is a town that is full of fascinating history, and an important pilgrimage spot for many who find its features and orientation something more than simply beautiful. Enjoy this visit to this special place, and allow Carlos to provide a peek into the perspectives of some of these pilgrims, too!

Facisinating story about the Bernal and and the customs associated with it. You can understand why the Mexicans have such deep religous faith based on their culture. Thank you for sharing this with this e-presentation. Ken Dunn - Orange, CA Rotary new member.

This is a neat concept for sharing and expanding communication throughout Rotary worldwide. It would help if this activity were easier to find and use on the RI wepsite Home page.

This is definitely a wonderful place I would like to visit. Having spent time in the Sierra Norte de Puebla, I have had an opportunity to see some of the local dancers and traditions. This program made me want to go back once again. (As an aside, the photo of the feathered serpent reminded me that is how they once referred to Past District Governors at a Rotary District Conference in Puebla. Not very flattering, eh? In Pakistan we were referred to as Sacred Cows!)

Thanks for sharing about a part of the world I'm not familiar with. In addition to its beauty it has a unique and interesting history.
This is my first visit to the makeup portion of the website. It is interesting and inspiring to get a fresh look at other clubs and learn new ideas. It will hopefully help individual Rotarians learn more about all Rotary International has to offer.

1. Congrats to w-clubs becoming a permanent part of Rotary,
2. Another informative and interesting program.
Speaker Calzada introduces us to Bernal, "Town of Mystery", established in Mexico in 1647. It's primary inhabitants at inception were the Otomies-Chichimecas, whose descendants still reside there today. Bernal's population size of 4,000 has remained consistent throughout it's history. Bernal's "most striking piece of the landscape" is La Pena de Bernal, the third largest natural monolith in the world and the second largest in mass (with Ayer's Rock in Australia being first). This special place attracts many visitors, both for climbing, reflection and even worship. A small church rests about halfway up the elevation. In fact, Bernal is surrounded by sacred hills. A harsh landscape, the terrain and climate have spiritually inspired it's inhabitants and imbued them with a deep reverence for their surroundings. Excellent program!
Very informative. Thanks.
