Program: Send your Mother a Cow!

Speaker: Beth Levenson

A Midwestern farmer named Dan West was ladling out rations of milk to hungry children during the Spanish Civil War when it hit him.

“These children don’t need a cup, they need a cow.”

West, who was serving as a Church of the Brethren relief worker, was forced to decide who would receive the limited rations and who wouldn’t – literally, who would live and who would die. This kind of aid, he knew, would never be enough.

Thanks to Heifer International (Arkansas, USA), millions of people who were once hungry are nourished by milk, eggs and fresh vegetables. Families who for generations knew only poverty are building new homes and starting businesses. They send their children to school instead of to the fields to do backbreaking work. Best of all, each partner family experiences the dignity of sharing as they give one or more of their animal’s offspring to another family in need.

Heifer has been at the top of the list in our home for several years.  We began by "giving" our daughter a flock of ducks!  I think we heard of the organization at a church convention, where they had a vendor booth.  We were intrigued by the idea and have used it many times since, feeling good every time!

I agree with Anna Jarvis that the honoring of our mother's has become too commercialized and the billion's spent on Mother's Day could be better spent in honoring our mother's and helping to stamp out world hunger.  The Heifer Project should be at the top of the list.

12/May/10, 8:14am

5-12-2010Beth Levenson’s "Send Your Mother a Cow" presentation was not only emotionally engaging but also substantively practical. Dan West’s realization in 1939 that Spanish children were starving because of the civil war and that a truly effective solution would have been to give them a cow not just a cup of milk is exactly the kind of smart thinking that should be behind all our acts of philanthropy and care. The long term success of Heifer, an organization that does give needy people cows and other living help, speaks to the intelligence of this sort of love and care for humanity. In my five years as a Rotarian I’ve come to admire all Rotary programs because they help people the way true friends would–practically, sensitively, and with the full commitment and engagement of those being helped. Thanks, Beth!Brooks C. I think giving to Heifer International is a great idea but I also think buying cards and flowers is a great idea.  Florists now have heard too many times (or read) "in lieu of flowers", that Mother's day is at least one of those times their businesses can thrive.  I did get flowers and I was grateful for myself and for the florist.  I think we can give to both.  Great meeting.

10/May/10, 4:19pm

With counterparts in 160 other countries, Mother's Day began in the U.S. in 1912 thanks to Anna Jarvis, who coined the term and created Mother's Day International Association. Jarvis later became disenchanted with the holiday owing to her perceived excessive commercialization of its observance. Today it is the most popular U.S. restaurant dining day of the year, with $2.6 billion dollars spent on flowers as well. Our speaker proposes an alternative way to celebrate the occasion: making a gift to Heifer International. A donation purchases a heifer, for instance,  which is then given to a needy family in one of 128 countries. In return for the "living loan" of the heifer, the recipient family is required to give one of the heifer's offspring to another needy family. By this exponential method, the Heifer International program, begun 66 years ago, has helped tens of thousands of families become productive and self-sufficient.  Thus, the Mother's Day gift to Heifer International, in the name of one's mother, provides nurture to others long after a Mother's Day bouquet has wilted and disappeared. Great program!

The Heifer Program is a wonderful project. When I was working on the low-cost shelter project in Mexico (along with other help for the people there in the form of Hunger Plus food, a beehive project, an ambulance and playground and AV equipment) my 1997-98 classmate, Charlie Whittle, of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, provided a Heifer Program to the area. I don't recall all the animals that were sent, but I do remember that there were EARTHWORMS!!

NOTE TO PRESIDENT LARRY: Miss Truly asked me to advise you that sometimes she IS irregular.
