Program: Things You May Not Have Known You Can Do With Google

Speaker: Rushton Hurley
Today's program is designed to help even the most techno-reluctant Rotarian learn tricks using the Google search page. You, too, can amaze friends and family with the many goodies revealed in the PDF linked below. All this for the price of a lunch to support our club's service projects (if you're feeling honorable) or for free (if you just want to build bad karma by ignoring the PayPal button).
The presenter, Rushton Hurley, is a high school teacher of Japanese language who spends way, way too much time at a computer keyboard preparing presentations for the teachers he trains around the world to use technology to better engage their students in their learning. He also hopes that his interest in technology will help the eClub find ways to help more young people take an interest in Rotary. Additionally, he juggles, though that has very limited relevance to today's presentation, which we should get started!

I learned more than I imaginved I would about the home page of Google. I had guessed he program would be talking about other Google features. Neat!
Excellent format and really nice way to make up a program.

great info on Google! Short cuts that I didn't realize I could use-thanks!
Enjoyed the Google tutorial, and would like to add this: You can place quote marks around the entry in the search box, Google will only return hits on the string, not on each of the individual words.

This was a great meeting. I was able to use the "snap" feature on Windows 7 to show two screens side by side to follow along with the program.
I always come to this site to make up Rotary meetings. This is one of the best I've participated in. I use Google all the time, but I had no idea about most of the tips offered by Mr. Hurley. I look forward to another one of this programs.--Davilynn Furlow

These functions of Google are very interesting. I have used some of them but will add the others to my repertoire. Google is really amazing in terms of what it will do, over and above what it will find.

I enjoyed reading the story of the two horses. I guess it is important to know when to lead and when to be led. Our club I think is too small to support the platform for an eclub; however, the larger one in San Angelo, Texas might be interested.

NO comments to add, just thank you for the opportunity!
Google made RGHF work. Go to Google and put in the two words early leaders. Or Rotary history. You'll see what I mean. RGHF is highly visible. In our early years, we begged Rotarians to add links to their websites. However, we soon learned that Rotarians don't often visit their own club or district websites, but the use Google. www.historysearch.org is a customized Google search which will find material on RI that you will never find by going to www.rotary.org
Hooray for Google and all that they do.
Okay Google Joe Kagle, or even Jack Selway.

Another great meeting! I was not aware that RI is interested in all of the service hours we do. I learned a few knew things about Google and I'm hoping that someday we'll have a meeing on the more complex and advanced searches that we can do.
And to bring it all back in to perspective was the story of the Two Horses. Animals are amazing.

Program provider Rushton Hurley teaches us some of the additional features available with Google, the well known internet search engine begun in the late 1990s by Stanford University PhD students Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Turns out, many local searches can be conducted by entering a keyword along with the appropriate zip code. In many cases, striking the ENTER button is not even required. Rushton also introduces us to some helpful websites, regardless of how you get there, such as U.S. Geological Survey and flightstats.com. You can always count on Rushton to provide an interesting program. Thanks!
Good program. I am already trying out some new things as a result of viewing this.

Very cool. If all of us "read the manual" on the internet sites, the tools learned would make us even more addicted! Great Program. Google 201 next!
5-24-2010Rushton Hurley’s Google tutorial is great! It’s clear, direct, and the fact that Rushton made it interactive–I really did open my browser and work through each step–made the learning all the more concrete! I especially liked the intuitive course of thought that Rushton followed which is close to the way our minds move from one subject to another. I also bookmarked the Google for Educators link which looks like a real treasure trove of information.I write routinely on financial matters and being a better researching through mastering Google’s search capabilities will be an enormous help!Thank you Rushton!Yours in Rotary, Brooks
This course its very important for all the members from the E-CLUBS, thank you for you interests in helping us.
Thank u Hurley for schooling me in google.com
I use Google for many questions and searches. I also use Yahoo Search. It's interesting that sometimes one search engine has a great deal more information than the other. (I often feel as if I am living in Buck Rogers time, remembering when I was a kid we had a party line on the phone -- which was always connected by a phone line.) Ah, times they are a changin'.
Thanks to Google, I found this e-club!
Love Google, especially the voice activated search on the iPhone and iPad. You get real use to having any information you want at your finger tips or voice comand.
