Program: East Side Heroes

Speaker: Enrique Flores
This week's speaker is Enrique Flores, the founder of a San Jose, California-based nonprofit called East Side Heroes. Enrique has devoted seven years to helping young people in the neighborhoods where he grew up realize their academic potential through scholarships to top high schools. His service recently earned him the Santa Clara University Alumni Association's 2010 Ignatian Award. This award is given to recognize alumni who live the SCU ideals of competence, conscience, and compassion, and who have been a credit to the Alumni Association and the University through outstanding service to humanity.
The program will tell you about East Side Heroes, with quotes from those who have worked with Enrique, affirming his commitment to young people seeking to find something better in their lives. In the beginning of the program, there is a link to a five-minute interview of Enrique and two of his scholarship students, which I hope you will take time to watch. Once done, you may need to click "back" on your browser to return to the program.

Thank you for this inspiring story!
A wonderful growing, ongoing project/
Good for Enrique and all that has happened as a result of his experience and efforts and those who have supported him. It would be so refreshing to see this kind of coverage on our newscasts. To the the wonderful things being accomplished in this country instead of the constant coverage of all the things that are no so good.
It is great to see young people making a difference in their community.
So many kids in the States need our help. Recently being hired to teach some business courses to the unemployed (average age 45) shows what happens to those who don't "get it" early in life. The lack of societal and educational tools guarantees the greater chance of a rocky future employment path, creating for them and society a great future cost. It is so much easier to help people when they are young and have time to develop the right tools.

It's great to have this option for making up a meeting. This is an especially busy time for me and although I enjoy meeting the people face to face at other clubs, sometimes it's just very difficult.
East Side Heroes is doing great work. We should strive for a system where any child who wants to attend a private school can do so, not just the lucky children of the well-to-do.

Your meetings are always interesting and entertaining. As always, your speaker was very good. I find it difficult to understand how y'all can constantly come up with outstanding programs. No matter, I look forward to a makeup with you when I need one.
Wonderful to learn about this innovative and effective program in San Jose. It is a model which could be used in many other urban communities as well.

This was a great program. I grew up near Gary Indiana ans saw the sme kind of blight and dispare in the city there. Some will find s wsy out by themselves, but most will need a helping hand and a great deal of guidence to make it.
Thanks,

This program was clear, focused, and well-written. Having recently done some work along these lines in inner-city Chattanooga, I really appreciated what the author had to say. The capacity-building goals toward the end are important and will produce long-term benefits. Best wishes for every success!
Sounds like a great program to help kids further their education.

Excellent e-meeting once again. Especially fond of the "happiness" quotes...
This is the first time I have completed an e-meeting. You do it very well and I was very interested to see what all you had to share. The program on East Side Heroes was great. They are doing wonderful work!
I enjoyed the meeting. It is nice to see what is going on around the world with Rotary Club!
Great to be re-assured that Rotary is still very involved in the Polio Radication Program. Thanks to the massive efforts of Rotary, the Caribbean made great progress in the eiighties and nineties in polio education and eradication.

Informational and inspirational program. Thanks!
I know that area from my days in San Francisco. What a treat to see such fine people and the only "gang sign" were their warm smiles.
Thanks for making it so easy and convinent to make up. I enjoy learning about the East Side Heroes.
This week's program is an inspirational look at East Side Heroes (ESH), a non-profit organization founded by Enrique Flores at age 24, for the purpose of helping at-risk youth and young adults overcome the challenges of gang violence, drug addiction, depression and educational disadvantages. ESH fulfills its mission through academic scholarships, community service projects and lifelong mentoring. Enrique believes that "Leaders Create Leaders"; so therefore ESH strives to produce future mentors for exponential increase of its impact. As impressive as ESH is its founder Enrique Flores, the son of a Mexican immigrant janitor who believed strongly in the value of education. Enrique has earned a Master's Degree in Counseling, written an autobiography and founded a non-profit organization that is teaching and helping others how to follow his own successful path of achievement. Great program!
This was a fantastic program which has given me a great deal to think about.
Enrique I hope your dream continues, excellent work.
I appreciate the 'QUOTABLE QUOTES" about "happiness" and will pass them on to my faculty members and students (I am the program director for a department at a university in Nacogdoches, TX). I also think our progress in eliminating Polio is OUTSTANDING!!
I enjoyed the program today. Very informative!
Nice program. Thanks for making this available to us!

CONGRATULATIONS ENRIQUE, IS BEATIFUL, YOUR WORK
It's always good to see a program which provides young people a positive direction for their lives.
I am delighted to see that ESH is taking care of these young kids to ensure that they get a good 3rd level education.
Outstanding! If you have a chance = google Dr. Benjamin Carson also known as The Gifted Hands. His childhood, struggles, gangs, and goal of becoming a pediatric neurosurgeon is amazing. He is the leading pediatric neurosurgeon in the United States and Worldwide. He website http://carsonscholars.org/ has information about scholarships programs to help disadvantaged youths. Check it out and read his story. He is an excellent of - you can do anything if you choose to, it is up to you

Thanks for providing this service for Rotarians!
Very interesting and inspirational.
Wow! We certainly need more people like Enrique Flores to work towards saving many of these kids! There is nothing more powerful than full commitment to serve humanity. This reminds me of my own childhood when my father said: "I have nothing else to leave to you, son, but a good education." He told me that a good education would open many doors for me, and he was right! He also inculcated in me the idea of giving back, and this is exactly what Enrique Flores is doing. I want to thank our eClub for bringing to us this inspiring message.

Thank you for all the wonderful information regarding Polio. It is amazing to see what can be accomplished when working together.
I congratulate Enrique for this noble act, he never forgets where his roots are and for sharing his good fortune to others. Keep it up!

What I do like in this program: that young people support other young people! That's great! I wish I could help them with a donation.
