This week's program, the first of our new Rotary year comes to us from this year's president, Joe Kagle. In it he draws upon his storied life to lay out a road map not just for his undertaking of a commitment, but for anyone who is starting or considering a new path. Along the way we get a great introduction to the guy who will be sitting where the bucks stop this year.

If you don't know Joe already this program will give you some great insight. It is illustrated by the author himself.

A very interesting program,  I appreciated the themes of "freedom," "self-awareness," and "creativity."  The principle of "extinction equals creativity" applies, as well, to people who work in other fields (like law, anthropology, and ministry, as I do) without much structure to guide or reinforce them.  So what the author said toward the end of the program was meaningful to me.

I enjoyed Martha Kanter's presentation on President Obama's vision for 21st Century education for our children.  Daniel Pink nailed it when he said, "We must prepare students for their future, not our past."  To do that, we must change not only the content, but also the means by which we deliver an excellent education to everyone.

I enjoyed the video reviewing the last day of the RI convention in Montreal, a convention I was fortunate to be able to attend.  Also the program of helping the youth reath their potentials, East side Heroes, is a good example of what Rotary is all about.

I can tell already that this year with Joe as president will challenge me. Joe's writing has already challenged me to THINK! One can't just skim his words and expect to understand them. T0-morrow morning I go to our local airport where the Club will farewell our Brazilian exchange student. We will then have a bar-b-que breakfast & be shown over an aircraft factory. This will then double as a Club "vocational visit".

If this program from new  president Joseph Kagle is any indication, then RECSWUSA is going to have a wonderful Rotary year. Kagle delivers an informative and artistic presentation of his plan for the Rotary year via vivid statements of personal philosophy covering Leadership, Vision, Passion, Commitment, Listening, Attitude, Self-Examination and Independence. He includes his personal "list of rules" which have guided his "professional life as an administrator and as an educator".  These rules emphasize self-reliance and collaboration, observation and initiative, preparation and passion, and a concern for fairness to others. Great Rotary program. Good luck this year President Kagle!

Excellent correlation between the key rights of freedom stated in the Constitution, and the fact that if the basic necessities of safety, health, food and water aren't met, then people are not truly free.  RCI is dedicated to addressing these basic needs, and in a sense, working on freedom for all.

Just read Dr. Kanker's presentation and several of the comments.  Very interesting.  I will note that there is plenty wrong with our educataion system that must be fixed at the local vice national level, and school boards are sometimes the major obstacle.  The first fix is involved parents and citizens. 

As for higher education, it is getting priced out of range of working-class families.  Government grants are too few and do too little to offset the price of a degree from a major state university, and student loans is akin to loan sharking considering what is paid back.

It was interesting to see what I wrote and what I sent as visuals to go together. Stephen did a wonderful job of putting the two together. And what did I learn? That if you make a written text of 7 1/2 pages then add six visuals that take a whole page, you end with a lot of pages for a program. I promise that when I do anyother, I will shorten the written part to less and reduce the size of the images that accompany it. But as I said in my essay, it was not a "mistake" but it sure is another 'learning experience'. I wish to thank Stephen Shearin for putting this first meeting together for us all (plus all the other who contributed).

for a new member like me,it is important and usefull (minutes of board meeting help to understand who is who)

also to learn how important it is to dance in the rain..

I have three  questions:

1/when and how do we get the induction course?I can use skype

2/not a lot of BIO files  are filled...

I tried twice to do mine,filled everything,and at the end ,when I "save"....nothing happens,or  is saved,..and it has to be rewritten again,..and so on

am I wrong somewhere?

3/when "physical" meetings are planned,it is important for far away members to know it as much as possible in advance(albuquerque for instance in october,thanks,even if I will miss that one)

for instance ,any idea when the passing to new President will be done in june 2011??? I would like to fly to arizona for that occasion,for instance
