Program: The Winds of Change

Speaker: Mel and Judy Taunt

As a quick speaker intro, 2xPDG, PP (and so much more) Mel and 2xWPDG, inaugural eClub President (and so much more) Judy Taunt have been married for over 50 years and generally kicking butt (in the best possible way) all of that time. Their accomplishments are too great to list here, and if I know them, and I think I do, they'd say that this is not the time or the place for that, just that they are glad to offer this week's program and that they hope you find reading it at least somewhat enjoyable.

(end:editors intro)

Beginnings - Where it all began (Rotary eClub Southwest USA that is) … Year ONE

In the beginning …… there was chaos, a few ideas, and fewer people … then more chaos, more ideas, and a few more people … then less chaos, and we were suddenly a charted eClub. WOW!

Its been an amazing ride and too much to try to share in one meeting, so we will break our eClub history into manageable “bites” over this year. The story pretty much speaks for itself so without further ado, we invite you to our “Beginnings.”

Judy and Mel Taunt

It is wonderful to see the way you all have evolved. Just from a concept to a fulfledged Rotary Club. In Rotary Clubs in India the fellowship before the meeting is where we manage to catch up with fellow Rotarians (some of whom are now great friends). The bonding between some of the founder members is unbelievable. Eclubs will have to ensure that members get together regularly for bonding. It brings about great teampirit. One thing is for sure - If I have to leave my Rotary Club due to relocation or other reasons I will seriously consider joining an Eclub.  -- Rtn. Work travel keeps me out of town 75% of the time now.   Sad as I love the interaction with the people at my club.   At least the online makeup allows some connection to Rotary and does not harm our clubs attendance.

09/Sep/10, 2:33pm

I always enjoy making up with this club. The programs are informative and interesting. This is convenient for me also.

07/Sep/10, 12:58pm

I really enjoyed this program!  I've been making up missed meetings through your e-club for, I think, about four years now.  I haven't been with you from the beginning but almost.  Your first-year background was therefore very interesting.  I do enjoy the personal fellowship of Rotary and thus try to attend my terra club when at all possible.  But I have an on-the-road assignment now and am often away from home for weeks on end.  Being able to make up online is a real boon, and your club is a fantastic option.  My Marshfield, MO Rotarians have heard me speak of you many times and some of them are now asking me how to do their makeups through recswusa--so you may be joined by some other Marshfielders in the near future.  Keep up the great work.

To Rotary eCLub of the Southwest,

The July 19th meeting is particularly helpful to me in Rotary.  I am in the Gulf of Alaska on the Royal Princess at 58 degrees north longitude.  To say the least I cannot participate in my Rotary Club meeting.

I very much enjoyed learning about the history of your eRotary Club.  I hope our club one day gets a little more techo savy.

Yours in Rotary,

Engings and Beginning was a good program.  I was amazed at the diversity of member locations -- Mexico, Africa, Austrailia, France, etc.  What a deal !  Continuing and service project focus was another great point of the program --- Grubrest, dictionary, windmills, 4-way test -- all of these sound just like our club which is land-bound.   I would like to know more about the global art auction. Great program & great cyber club.  Thank you.

I loved The Winds of Change report on the historical aspects of establishing a pilot cyber Rotary club which was made possible in 2001.  The milestones the first year were impressive.

As a Rotary who relies on this medium for make-up, I appreciate the cyber club leaders who spend time to create this opportunity.  The challenges of communication are everywhere.  I can imagine that the update of the website and trying to find interesting programs are constant challenges and, yet, opportunities.  The other component I loved was that those members of this cyber club continue the focus on club service -- wherever they reside.  So, congratulations and thank you.

Your powerpoint presentations sharing how your club fellowships was inspiring.  The idea of 24/7 involvement, 100% attendance coupled with service and fellowship is incredible.

How do you get involved with other clubs?  For example, at the Grand Canyon Club we host a holiday-dinner dance and I'd love to extend an invitation to your club members to join us in our event.  How do we participate in some of your event?

I really like the Penguin Award. The program on the creation of the EClub was very interesting. As I amke up when in Colorado through your club I find the programs dynamite. Many Rotarians have the attitude, "well you don't get the one-on-one of a regular meeting", direct quote from a PDG in our club. Maybe that is so from one standpoint but you get graet programs and anyone not looking at the EClub programs is missing out. The whole key is Service Above Self. There's more than one way to skin a cat.

Knowing how you started, making a new idea work, is all part of what makes Rotary as successful in helping others as it is.  You have to believe in accomplishing what first seems impossible before the possible answers of solving a problem can be offered.

Great to hear about how the club began, its challenges and successes. You have accomplished much in such a short time. Congratulations!

19/Jul/10, 4:37pm

Speakers Judy and Mel Taunt introduce us to the beginnings of RECSWUSA, starting with Rotary International's adoption in 2001 of a pilot project for cyber clubs, to District 5510's notification in 2003 of their acceptance to have a cyber club, to signature of the "Terms of Participation Agreement" in 2004, to RECSWUSA's official charter date of April 1, 2004 (no fooling!). All the planning and organization, creation of Constitution & Bylaws, development of a member application, marketing and recruitment, just remind us that Rotarians are organized, determined folks, who work hard and produce amazing results. The success of RECSWUSA derives directly from all this groundbreaking effort. The continuing evolution of the website and membership retention are two of the biggest challenges for the years ahead; and RECSWUSA is already making these areas a priority. Keep up the good work. You are a great addition to the Rotary family!

What a wonderful program to review not only our eClub's history but that of Paul Harris. I needed to be reminded of the story of Paul's life, and I learned a great deal from Judy's coverage of our club's background and history. I missed so much of this during my long convalescence from my laryngectomy. After I lost my voice box, the eClub was really the only way for me to remain in Rotary. It has been a grand experience and allows me to continue to contribute -- even without a "real" voice.

I think from the first time I visited the eClub it was great.  I am glad it was started and continues.  I think it is the begginning of the future of Rotary and how we may evolve to include more members who want to contribute but not by seating in meetings week after week.

I also loved the dream questions and think all of us should review those questions from time to time.

I enjoyed reading about the history of the club.  E-clubs are a great addition to Rotary and this club is not only a fine exemplar of a great e-club, but a great Rotary club. Indeed an e-club exemplifies Rotary by its daily engagement as an international organization.  Few "terra" clubs have international visitors at every meeting!  I am glad to see that RI has made them permanent.  I have attended more e-club meetings in the last year than "terra" clubs due to scheduling challenges.  This has made it possible to remain connected and a part of Rotary.

Thank God for CP Judy and PDG Mel. Lovely memories, and how much I liked that old, beat up website and forum. Thanks to Karen, RGHF is still using that style. Say, did Ellan Whetten, shown in 2005 change her name to run with Arizona's McCain? Sure looks like. Have a great week, enjoyed the meeting. Now back to work at RGHF.

I really enjoyed this program and it is a marvelous opening act to our visit next week of District Governo of 5510, Glenn Smith. Mel and Judy will give us additional looks and insight into our beginnings later in this year. Thank you both. A signed First Penguin Award is in the mail. One person asked why it had no penquins as decoration on it. It does; they have just transformed into exotic birds of the future by being FIRST in effort. Do you expect the ordinary from extraodinary individuals? Thank you Judy. Thank you Mel.

Thanks, Mel and Judy.  It's great to know the history of the eClub and all that went into its creation.  The Rotary community will be forever grateful for what you have done.
