Program: Visit from District Governor Glenn Smith

Speaker: None other than Glenn Smith himself!

In the course of a Rotary year, every club is hopefully visited by its District Governor. In some districts, this presents a bit of a challenge. Hours and miles, miles and hours, the entire year is spent running hither and yon to see all the clubs.

For Glenn Smith, he had to go the extra nano-mile - into cyberspace - for our club. And he did so with vigor and aplomb. He joined us for a Board meeting, and is good enough to join us again as the guest speaker this week. So without further ado ( or doo doo - for  those that are still reading), I'm proud to present DG Glenn Smith.

Very interesting way to make up a meeting.  I was researching local clubs in my area as I needed to make up our July 21, 2010 meeting and I can say that although visiting other clubs has its benefits, I will tout the eclub as an option at our next meeting on August 4th. Thanks so much for the opportunity and best of luck with future topics

Motivating program from District 5510 Governor Glenn Smith who commends RECSWUSA on their newly gained permanent club status, and  encourages all Rotarians to support Rotary International President Ray Klinginsmith's "Building Communities - Bridging Continents" year. Governor Smith discusses the 5th wheel of Rotary service, added this year, NEW GENERATIONS SERVICE, to target youth and young adults for leadership training and exchange programs. We are also told about RI's Strategic Plan of emphasizing Bigger Clubs, Better Clubs and Bolder Clubs as priorities for strengthening Rotary's future. Finally Governor Smith acquaints us with his own District 5510 Strategic Plan entitled "Seize the Vision". Building upon the teachings of author Bill Carter, the District 5510 goal will focus on long term planning, the Group Study Exchange program and membership recruitment, development and retention. Excellent program. Governor Smith could be an RI president himself someday!

Always good to hear what the DG has to say.  Unfortunately the membership mantra is getting a little old as we have all heard it for several years now.  However, if we don't actually Take Action (part of the theme from my Rotary Year as Pres), we may soon find ourselves in the same position as the local Lions club where I live, very few members and that the average age is about 70.

Hello all at e-club.  I truly enjoyed making up my meeting here.  I am a member of the Rotary Club of New Minas, Sunrise in New Minas, Nova Scotia, Canada.  I have served as Secretary, and President of the Club in 2003-2005 respecively.

I am employed as Faculty of the local Community College here, and also hold a part-tiime job at Annapolis Valley Radio in sales.  Prior to teaching, I worked at the same radio station as General Manager.  It has afforded me the opportunity to now teach my trade.

As a new teacher, we have to take courses that make up a "College Diploma", so I have been away most of the month of July, so therefore, I am thankful for this opportunity to do my make up.

I enjoyed this make-up and in reflecting on the quotes, I think about change...and while some folks are afraid of change, I like it...it's kind of like the quotes...Why Not?

I also enjoyed the humour in the fire department story...good one.

Thanks to all in Rotary.

I have just visited your site for the second time for a make up meeting and found it delightful - again. Thank you for posting a previous note I had sent.  This week, I copied and pasted the funny story about the firefighters and sent it to my older son, a firefighter with the Fairfax County Fire Department for the last 26 years. I'm sure he/his fellow officers will enjoy it. Now, do you have one for computer exec? My younger son works for Dell.

Thank you for extending the Rotary hand of friendship to me. I'm sure I'll be visiting again, especially since I've received several nice e-ms from Bob Hand.

Best wishes, Nancy Wright Beasley

DG Glenn Smith has some wonderful information in his official Rotary speech to the eClub. I was pleased to see the accolades he accorded our club regarding our rapidly increasing membership. I look forward to Glenn's year very much. And I think that should Bubba III and Hummingbird Rose ever travel to the Rockies in Colorado and happen to stop in Quaking Aspens or Podunk Pines that Miss Truly Candid would be happy to show them around in her Edsel. She might even write a story about them in the Podunk Pines Weekly News.

26/Jul/10, 4:06pm

I strongly believe that every onganization...group, club, community, etc...needs to have a vision of what it will become, what its role in the world will be.

Because of our diverse nature...geographically, culturally, even linguistically...a eClub is bound do differ from the typical local club.  This makes creating a vision a challenge.

Nevertheless, I believe we're up to the challenge.  I hope we can perceive a vision worthy of our role in the world.  It'll be an exercise worth the effort.

7-26-2010District Governor Glenn Smith’s comments regarding Rotary themes for the coming year and the coming 3-5 years was great. I think Rotary’s emphasis on an analysis of our membership’s demographic traits is vital as we move forward to attract more and more members who reflect not only the current demographics of the world but who also share and embrace the values of Rotary.Thank you.

Another great program. Was it JFK or Cicero who first used the " ask not" speech...regardless it still rings true today and fits with our call to service. Also, always love your fun stories and "the sausages" made me laugh out loud!

Wonderful program. I wrote to our DG and thanked him. He is a subscribing member of RGHF. His president, RIP Ray, is a full member, as is our eClub president, and the two Rotarians who proposed and motioned the Fifth Avenue of Service.

Enjoyed the story of Bubba Jay.  I will look him up and check out his work.

I wish to thank DG Glenn Smith for this glimpse into what the District has to help our eClub grow. I especially liked the discussion about club visioning and growing membership. We will work this year on a vision statement that will give our members and the District on what we will be in 2020 (a play on 20/20 vision). Also we will work on our membership, helping each member to know and grow as a members (being helped by a mentoring system when new members come in the club).

I turned my head to other business over the weekend and all at once we had five very new members (bringing our total membership today to 74, which is roughly 30 more than we had in July of 2009): John Degaw, Immanuel Freedman, Sandy Apalos, Elif Tamac, and Curl Larson. I welcome you all to our Rotary club, our eClub. As an eClub that is growing as we sleep, we must welcome all who wish to join this vision; making sure that all know what is happening, keep in touch so that all has traditional fellowship and club opportunities, and giving all the pleasure to serve.

As I said, I welcome John, Immanuel, Sandy, Elif and Curl, plus this marvelous gift to talk with our District Governor Glenn. Even my imaginary artist friend, Bubba, greets you since I have told him so much about you all this glowing Texas morning.
