8-30-2010This story of the help given by Rotarians to the people of Sierra Norte de Puebla is more a story of the metamorphosis that the Rotarians themselves experienced than of the improvements in the lives of those they served. A vast multi-year project that included home-building, providing beans and rice, creating playgrounds, teaching facilities, and allowing greater mobility to many through gifts of wheelchairs is enough in and of itself. But even more inspirational is the story of the changes in the lives of the givers as they sought to do so much for those in need.Thank you!

29/Aug/10, 8:20pm

It has been my distinct honor to have known Norma before she put a PDG in front of her name and "Roderique" at the end. We have shared wonderful experiences throughout the years … for example, Norma, Ron, Judy and I went to the Singapore RIC together, and then to Bali … but the mark of her time as a Rotarian, DG/PDG, and humanitarian is reflected in her remarkable journey to improve the lives of the residents of Sierra Norte de Puebla. A lesson in service that we all can benefit from.Mel Taunt

23/Aug/10, 3:39pm

It was fun re-reading my story of my beloved villages. I almost felt as if I were back in the Sierra Norte. It is still my hope to once again be able to travel there and see all the recent improvements.

22/Aug/10, 8:22pm

I wish you much success with the construction and opening of the St. Lucia national tennis center

The Project conducted in Puebla nortede Zone is an example that things can be done. Of course, required to sustain the desire to finish, even despite all the problems that may arise. Because as the saying goes "If it were easy anyone would make" The most important thing for people in need is to teach how to achieve their needs and give them not only as an example of the fish.

We have seen in many cases aid for Mexico that border there are always problems with the entry of certain products, so we must focus on finding ways to expedite the paperwork and leave a presendente so that in future this type of aid may timely way to the needy. Congratulations.

I thoroughly enjoyed the speaker's account of the project in Sierra Norte de Puebla.  The lessons she outlined are critical to all of us who try to establish projects with other clubs and in other locations.  Rotary projects do tend to take on a life of their own and continue to grow and expand long past the original idea.  The synergy of Rotarians in action is an amazing force for good.

I was amused that an ancient Roman stoic believed Romans used too much paper.  This kept them from meditation and communing with nature.  A good comparison to our current use of technology.  I belong to the Tigard, Oregon Rotary noon club.  We also have a dictionary project and this year started a middle school ethics program based on the four way test.

By far the best program I have ever "attended" at RECSWUSA!  This program had so much to offer . . . a great story (really, more than one story), some excellent quotes or quotables and some meaningful lessons or truisms.

Thank you!

***Here was my favorite part . . .

"When I visited these three villages to dedicate the houses, I saw the most amazing happening take place in Tlacuilotepec. Seven families received Rotary LCS houses. Many other villagers also need houses but were not chosen for these particular LCS. The people who received houses got together with those who did not and they all agreed to put funds into an account each month. This account is overseen by Rotarians. Each month they pull the name of one of the people who did not receive a house and they get together and build one for that family. When I visited the area to dedicate the Rotary houses, one of the community leaders said, 'Thank you for teaching us how to fish and not just giving us a fish.'”

A very inspiring Rotary story.  I especially loved the part where the one village pooled their money together to build other families homes who did not receive one from Rotary.  That embodies the word community at its finest and is also a lesson that many of us living amongst our first world luxuries could learn.

Congratulation Norma, your job in the Sierra Madre of Puebla is marvelous and the hands of all the Rotarians of the world make this dreams came true, as the Dr. Carlos Canseco dream of eradicating the “Polio” of the world, was only possible with the support of “Rotary” with his 1,000,000 Rotarians (in 1984) now is becoming a reality even if he is not with us… his ideal is; Maybe your village will become a big and progressive city in year to come.

¡Only Rotary can make true this kind of dreams!

I was in the Dr. Canseco Rotary Club and I had the chance of helping him in many ways, now I am in Recswusa and I still want to be part of the Rotary jobs, so regarding the Laboratory equipment that you say that may still be in Laredo, Tex. Let me tell you that “The Monterrey team” have a strong contacts with the Nuevo Laredo and Laredo Rotary Clubs and we may be able to help.

Pretty inspiring program.  My name is Tom Gibbens and i was a GSE Team Leader from District 6040 (northern Missouri) to Tsiwan in Feb/Mar of this year.  To be able to learn from people in a foreign country and share ideas and thoughts is a wonderful experience and is rewarding.  I think the Sierra Norte project is a truly great project that started off small and rapidly grew.  It is a typical application in rotary of ordinary people doing extradordinary things together.

16/Aug/10, 4:49pm

A very inspiring program (even by Rotary standards) from Past District Governor Norma Taylor-Roderique regarding the Sierra Norte low-cost shelter project over the past twelve years in Mexico. Building upon the success of a joint project with another District from which shelters were built in Ethiopia, the Sierra Norte project actually received it's greatest boost from frustrated efforts in Pakistan. Not only were shelters built in Mexico's Heather Kinross Rotary Village (an area so remote, it could be reached solely by burro), but a beehive program was introduced; wheelchairs were obatined for the handicapped, a micro loan program was initiated; emergency medical transporatation was established and lab equipment for a chemistry class procured. Now 104 shelters have been built. During the process, Norma learned, and lists, 13 lessons. All are valuable, and familiar to veteran, active Rotarians, but they remind us all why we love this great organization. Excellent program!

Once again, there were lessons here for anyone who is trying something new, something not done before, and something which takes the risk of failure when it begins. I love the lessons learned as the project moves along.

Thank you for your wisdom, wit and writing skills. What a combination? You are one more jewel in the crown of the eClub.

Although I had read this program before, it is always a wonderful experience to read what our fellow Rotarians are capable of doing.

The history of The Sierra Norte de Puebla projects was fascinating and truly heart warming.  I am always amazed at what a group of Rotarians with a purpose can accomplish! When a project such as this is realized the sense of gratification is huge.  But the true gratification comes from the resulting smiles and new self esteem of the people benefited by such a project.  For them, the world is now a better place and they will be motivated to help others.

Unable to download after several tries.  This happens more often than not with your site in the last year.  It's very frustrating!

Joe just looks younger every year! I'm a big fan of his work and fortunate to have one of his pieces hanging in our living room.
