Program: Flood in Pakistan - How is Rotary Responding?

Speaker: PP Larry Levenson

As of last Thursday, over eight million people were displaced or otherwise seriously affected by flooding in Pakistan. If you aren't familiar with the flood or what Rotary is doing as of now, this week's program will provide a good primer.

The photos probably only show a small portion of teh extent of teh damage.  Damage assessment is months away.  Truly an opportunity for teh world to come together to help a world of already impoverished people.  If only teh world will react.

Pakistan,needs our help

03/Sep/10, 2:41pm

The program on the Pakistan flood was very timely. Our club was working this morning to collect funds for Shelterboxes. I also enjoyed the monthly breakdown of Rotary activities and the history of the Rotary Emblem.

03/Sep/10, 10:37am

The history of the Rotary emblem was very interesting. I knew a little about the history of the emblem but not in the detail that it was explained en this meeting. These details help alot in makeing each Rotarian feel a part of theRotarian cause. Its important to know our history so we can tell others about it in the future and not let a great legacy disappear.

Regards

I have a friend in Pakistan who has sent me information about how it is on the ground. Although the cities are not impacted, it's so bad in the rural areas that farmers can't tell where their land boundaries are, which will create huge unrest once things dry up!

I read the "Visit from District Governor Glenn Smith".  It was very good.  I had learned about the new avenue of service -- New Generations Service -- and I think it is great.  The membership is getting older and we need young people to step-up and take charge in the future.  Also, I liked his comments about a vision being future oriented.  Good program.

I liked the program "Eight Million Packistanis Need Flood Help. . "  Monsoon rains have caused major disaster for 2,000 displaced people.  That is bad, plus the crops are destroyed for economics & food purposes.  The photos were current (some August 5, 2010) and unbelievable and brought the problem to "reality."   It looks like Rotarians are trying to meet the multiple needs.

With 1/5th of the country under water, this is obviously almost more than the mind can grasp . . . especially on the heels of so many devastating natural disasters.  It's no wonder that the world is suffering from "relief fatigue."  I would have liked to see more specific information about how/where to donate to the Pakistan Relief Effort.  A hot link would have made it easier.

24/Aug/10, 4:53pm

Very timely coverage af another major disaster (Pakistan flooding) where Rotary can make a difference, but we need all the help we can get from everyone!

24/Aug/10, 3:33pm

Indeed the flood damage and resulting destruction caused in Pakistan is unprecedented. Rotary is doing its part by sending funds internationally as well as locally.

I went to the earthquake areas in December 2005 to distribute relief goods and our fellow Rotarians are stepping up to the plate again.

The Pakistan flood story and pictures was done very well gave as good a view of the struggle as any media that i have seen!!!

23/Aug/10, 5:27pm

Pakistan has been hit with its worst flooding in 80 years. The record heavy monsoon rains  have destroyed homes, swamped farm lands, washed away roads and bridges. An estimated 14 million people have been adversely affected by the disaster, with over 2,000,000 displaced and perhaps as many as 3,000 killed. The United Nations has become very involved in the relief effort, as has, unsurprisingly, Rotary International, which established the Rotary Pakistan Flooding Recovery Fund. This fund, administered through RI's Matching Grants, is providing humanitarian assistance and disaster recovery. Rotary is seeking international partners for this massive project; and is also appealing to local Rotary clubs and districts. Once again, Rotary responds to need. Sad story, good program.

23/Aug/10, 4:21pm

The other night I watched a special program by Brian Williams: 'The First Five Days', an exploration of what went on in New Orleans after the hurricane. It was heart-breaking to think that this could go on, with no help for the people of N.O. over those beginning days, and that was here in America.

What is happening in Pakistan is at least a hundred times worse with little hope of much getting to those people there. We had a stable government and could not get help to people on time; Pakistan cannot help their own people without help from outside. It is a joy to hear that Rotary is taking up this need for service.

Good program and a needed program.

23/Aug/10, 4:15pm

These photos are heart wrenching. Having traveled to Pakistan and seen the poverty that exists there, I cannot imagine how these people begin to survive this flooding. It is a human disaster of enormous proportions. I am glad to see that Rotary is taking part in the humanitarian efforts there.
