Program: Promoting Childhood Literacy Through Illustrated Stories

Speaker: Samuel R. Brown

In this week's program Samuel Brown describes our new literacy project. It will allow all of the members of the eclub, along with Rotary Clubs around the world, to participate in a service project together. If you plan to attend the RI convention in Lisbon and would like to publicize the project, please download this bookmark [ www.srbrown.info/stories/bookmark.pdf ]--it is around 24 MB. Print it on cardstock and place the bookmarks in an appropriate place at the convention.

Welcome Carol Charles and Daniel.

Very good work Samuel Promoting Childhood Literacy.

Saturday, 9:39am

As always, a great program.

First and foremost, welcome to Carol, Katherine, and Daniel.  It is nice not being the newest member in the club.

Teacher's day for me happens to be quite special.  My favorite teacher is the one that introduced me to this Rotary Club and serves as our current president.  Happy Teacher's Day Hurley Sensei (as I know him).

Samuel's program shows the abillity to make a difference even with limited resources.  He recently shared this project with me and I have been quite impressed.  Keep up the great work Samuel!  Please let me know if I can ever be of any help.

Samuel Brown’s presentation shows clearly what one Rotarian can do by matching his professional passion (in Samuel’s case reading, books, teaching and literacy) to the enormous need of promoting childhood education in Mexico. Congratulations to Samuel and his imaginative and effective program of teaching.

Sam Brown is impressive and inspiring!

Friday, 7:59pm

Happy 9th Anniversary E-Club!  Remember when you were just a scoffed-at experiment.  Now here you are, all grown up and making it possible for hundreds of people to keep their Rotary membership, or make-up missed meeting!  Great job!!

Welcome to the new members, Charles, Carol & David.  I'm beginning to see that one of the advantages of e-club membership is that you're part of a truly diverse club with members from a very wide range of backgrounds.  Totally cool!

Kudos to Dr. Brown's meeting and insights.  I teach English, Government, Economics and PE to a group of underserved, poor (or lower socio-economic class as we call them nowadays) students in Globe, Arizona.  Dr. Brown is right on when he says kids to pride in owning their own books.  That is true right here in Arizona with older kids too.  I have been able to get books donated from an organization called KidsNeedToRead, and bought some myself from Townsend Books that sells several classics for $1.00 a piece.  I was surprised, but also pleased when my students began asking if they got  to keep the book they had just read.  To them is was like a trophy, proving they had read a book.  Their source of pride also became a source of pride for me.

Friday, 7:33pm

Awesome meeting! Thank you Samuel! ...And I must say, between our upcoming district conferrence and the RI convention, I am a little jealous of all my Rotarian friends who will soon be enjoying each others compan! I'm hopefull that my work life will allow me to attend next year!

I always astonished & pleased to see and learn of the many Global reaches and activities of this E Southwest ROTARY CLUB .

Today reminds us where ever we are in the world to hold dear in our hearts and lives, to  love  & care for each place .              The depths of our  Humanity is astounding as we unite in the aims and goals set  forth by Rotaians  World wide !

There is such outreach in the act of recognizing  others Birthdays and Anniversarys of members, very kind and everyone must appreciate  the outreach !  There is  a warmth  just reading  this of the depth and humor of  the interest  you have  for  all ! Nothing cold or  unwelcomining about this ROTARY CLUB !

Enjoyed Mother's Day video clip.  Project Amigo is really a great idea and project!

Wednesday, 9:49pm

This is a great project, both for intent and its simplicity.  Thanks Samuel!

For those who haven't responded to Rushton's survey please do so.  In an eClub we all need to be self motivated or we just become RINOs.

Wednesday, 9:30pm

I enjoyed the presentation on the literacy project.  Promoting literacy is more important now than it ever was before.  Technology will never replace the ability of humans to communicate, connect, and solve the world's problems, literacy is the key to developing the ability to do that.

I am passionate about education and the change that it can make in the world and for individuals who wish to change their lives.  Because of technology we are now able to bring the information people need to be successful and contribute to the improvement of their communities.  However they must be literate in order for this to occur.

Wednesday, 8:20pm

I could not get PayPal to come up, can you check that out.  I will make sure that the next time I get on to make up meetings that I cover this time as well.

Wednesday, 7:30pm

Always enjoying making ups with this clubq

Wednesday, 6:58pm

An excellent and innovative project. My Partner, Virginia and I chaired a Literacy Conference in District 7600 (Richmond, VA area) in 1990 and were surprised to learn about the challenges we face in many US communities and the role pictures play in the lives of people who grow up without being able to read.

Hmmmm . . . you have to stop making the meetings so interesting.  One reason people join an eClub is because of time constraints - and then the meetings are so interesting I just get lost in them.

Thanks, Jim for the recipe: I wonder if we can do Mothers' Day again?

Thank you Samuel for great program!

I really appreciate Samuel's service for poor children.

I'd like to cooperate with him someday.

Wednesday, 10:05am

Thank for this nice program again  this week

I loved the "daydream" and "nigtmare" of Jim, learned the "politically corrct terms" on trends for some future speeches!

Congratulation to Jim 's mother..she knows the goodies!!!(FRENCH toasts deserts )..congratulations Madam for your good taste!!!!

excellent idea also to promote our new literacy program;children of the world deserve our support

my last word will be to support our President Rushton in his continuous efforts to convince everyone to join our club meeting each week

in our club system ,I would expect us to be % attendance each week

Honestly ,you can spend hours and hours on our program, reading and reading ,taking notes, etc..

But is for some good reason ,you have little time to do so, at least you can spend still some time to attend shortly  the meeting ;it is not good to be there for some minutes, it should not be supported as an idea, but it is always better than nothing

it is very flexible, and let's be honest, not attending with rates below 75% at least is very surprising with our internet mode

so ,my friends ,let's make a great effort and reach 100% (at least 80% absolute minimum) for all meetings till summer ,as a first step

I am not giving lessons to anyone, just calling for our hearts to show that recswusa is THE performer in the district

best regards to all of you,in rotarian friendship

GERRY

Welcome to Carol, Charles and Daniel, our three new eclub members.  You all have careers and backgrounds to help our club expand its horizans.  So glad you are on board.  Sam Brown, thanks for sharing your passion for chilhood literacy.  I served in S. Korea in the USAF 1952-1953 and have a soft spot in my heart for the people of S Korea who have worked a miracle in their country.  I'm sure their teachers have had a lot to do with their Phenominal growth.

Tuesday, 6:14pm

Although I'm an infrequest visitor to the Rotary E-Club, I find myself a better person every time I do visit.  The programs are outstanding, and I usually enjoy a good laugh from some of the printed material.  I have the distinction of being the International Poster Child for Computer Illiteracy, so while attending e-meetings is a challenge, it is a rewarding experience. Thank You!

Tuesday, 5:51pm

There is nothing more important than improving the lives of children, particularly in impoverished areas because children who do not get a good start in life will be lost forever.  To me, this is a project that gives joy to both givers and to recipients.  Wonderful!!

This was a good makeup for me for last week - I am having some tough business weeks so appreciate your/our being here. I am actually a member of Palm Springs Rotary however I work 10 mi away during these days.   Keep it going - your programs are enlightening.

Tuesday, 4:22am

We are very familiar with Project Amigo. Several members as well as the club support the project.  This sounds like a wonderful way to reach out to children all over the world.  Education is the true road to peace

Tuesday, 3:23am

Great literacy program. Will engage a terra club to participate

Monday, 11:19pm

I attended last week on Monday, May 7, on Annecy Le Lac and I found the images interesting and beautiful, but my attendance was never recorded although I did click on 'finish meeting'. I would appreciated if someone would make sure that my attendance is recorded so that I do not break my 50 years of perfect attendance. I also found today's program thought-provoking.

Monday, 11:10pm

Remember in about the third grade when you suddenly realized that you could take a book home out of the school library and could read it all the way through? Remember what a sense of power that was for an  8-year-old? This week's program opens a whole new world for children.

Monday, 10:40pm

I had time this past week to visit Samuel's website and really enjoyed the children's stories.  I hope our club will be able to populate his map with more Rotarian visits to third grade classrooms.

Great meeting, especially the SAA video "Saying Yes".   I want to send that to my kids and their spouses.  BTW, I said "yes" to my wife 46 years ago when she caught me unawares not too long before I left for Vietnam as a United States Marine -- she had said "yes" long before that, and it was just a matter of time before I said "yes" too!

Monday, 1:35pm

Excellent program.  Reading aloud is so effective.  I teach 9th and 10th grade students and every Friday we have K-1 students come up to my room where my kids read to and with the younger kids.  It's a great cross-age experience for both sets of students.

Monday, 12:56pm

Literacy is the way to freedom and out of poverty.  This I feel is the number one crisis that is facing our world. Freedom is the education of the masses so that they can make intellegent decision about their own desteny.  The more you can make an activity interactive for the children the more they will partisipate and retain the activity.

Monday, 12:46pm

Putting together this literacy project has been very exciting for me. I look forward to the participation of members of our e-club. The project would fit especially well for those in developing countries or for those who live near primary schools that contain many children from disadvantaged economic circumstances. Enjoyed the video celebrating love and the affect two people can have on generations.  Also, enjoyed the literacy project program.  Our club also supports Project Amigo and has sent representatives in the past to read to the children.  Sam Brown's extension of that idea is wonderful.  I also enjoyed the video of the International President and his wife touring Lisbon, Portugal.  I wish I could go!

Another great progam. I really enjoyed Isaac's latest video. It speaks volumes as to how important family is to all of us - we simply have to take the time to appreciate those who mean the most to us. In our busy lives that often have us in different cities around the world this is a great reminder to enjoy time with our families.

Monday, 1:22am

Sam, what a beautiful idea to get these stories into the children's hands, whereever we go.  Also, it will be easy to have enough copies of each for a classroom of kids, so that all can read and follow along.  Thank you!

Monday, 1:08am

Wow, i guess the illustrated stories would work in every culture :)
