Illumination: A Grain of Earth
Speaker: Curated by Joseph Kagle
Date: Jan 17, 2011
Sometimes, some things happen that create a moment of illumination. It is interesting how some
ideas are a collective of many small grains of ideas and information all happening at a similar
time. On January 8, 2011, there was a tragedy in Tucson, Arizona. It changed the whole emphasis
of this program for January 17th. Many of our fellow eClub members live in District 5510 and
have good friends in Tucson. What this program is about is not to analyze the causes or political
implications of this event but to explore the human (Rotarian) reaction to reach out to those
others who felt the pain of the tragedy. It is an ‘illumination’ for some, a moment in time when
things seem clearer in the heart and the mind. At this time, a caring person reaches out (although
as our friend Gerry in France said, “(we are) a grain of earth”). As was pointed out to Gerry, a
grain of earth can tip a whole sack of grains, when it is placed at the right moment. This program
is about Rotarians’ illuminations and how grains of earth (ideas and feelings from many sources)
can create something more than themselves.

A New New for the New Year
Speaker: Joseph Kagle

Rotary and giving it new energy, new ideas. The challenge is that
Rotarians are aging (and some are dropping out of their Rotary
Clubs) and the replacement of new, younger members is not
happening fast enough to make up for those dropping out.
