Healing Water

Speaker: Matching Grant
Date: Oct 04, 2010

The problem of contaminated drinking water is a serious one. 3.4 million people, mostly

children, die from water-related diseases each year—that’s the equivalent of thirty-eight 777’s

crashing every day and killing everyone on board. Nearly one half of the world’s population is

suffering from debilitating water-related diseases. It has been estimated that water-borne

pathogens account for 90 percent of the deaths of children each year.

The Heart of the Matter

Speaker: Bubba Jay III
Date: Sep 27, 2010

Bubba Jay III lives in a small town in Calamity, Texas. The town (population: 472) is named after John Calamity, a Virginian (who was elected mayor) who came to Texas at the time of the Civil War. He never said: "You go to hell; I'm goin' ta Texas," but he always took credit for that quote in an election year- when telling others who believed him in the town why he came to Texas in the first place. He would say, "Where else could I go, it is God's country." He is most remembered in the town for his associate with his sister, Jane Calamity, which publicists of that time called Calamity Jane. He would remark at Beulah's General Store and Hair Salon: "They seem to alway turn things around in writing history. They don't lie but they sure embellish the truth and reality."

Bubba Jay (everyone in Texas seems to have a double first name) is an artist and a dear friend of our President Joe Kagle and his wife Anne. Bubba Jay shows in many major cities but mostly in New York and Paris. He is unique in that he lives the Texas rural life and yet his mind is global. He loves 'head fakes' (people thinking he is going in one direction when he really means to go in another) and many times starts an answer with a question. People, on first meeting Bubba, think that he is a typical Texas farm boy but he surprises them along the way. His favorite thing on a hot, high humidity day is to sit on his dock, contemplate the universe, while dipping his toes in the San Jacinto River (which runs adjacent to his humble home). He can afford a 'high style of living' but by choice lives the 'simple life'. After his friend Joe got back from an eClub get-together in Albuquerque, New Mexico, they assembled and talked. Bubba Jay III loves to talk; it is his passion and his mode of reaching out of himself (other than his visual art work which he does in a studio that he built above his home on the river). As Bubba would tell you, "Ya'll come down and visit. Listen to our conversations. Tell a few stories of your own about where you live and what you think about. Dip your toes in the river. If you agree, say so; if not, still say so! Ya'll welcome to join us!"

Return to El Calaboz

Speaker: James E. Mattson
Date: Sep 20, 2010

What are qualities of Rotary that each Rotarian should consider:  education is the first because without it we would not have the tools to help other human beings, strength of character is an important quality because without it we would not be able to persevere when service to others is hard to accomplish, and pride in accomplishment is vital to any effort since it is only by knowing, then expanding that knowledge that we can give someone else a hand when help is needed.  This is the story of someone who has served humanity in the past (and continues to serve humanity today).  Also, she has served her country with distinction.  Our eClub member Dr. Frank Longoria happens to have been raised in the same community in South Texas.  As he says, “We knew each other very well while we were growing up and attended the same elementary school and the same high school.  It also just so happens that my mother´s name is Esparza, and when she mentions that 7 out of 8 persons from that community who have earned a PhD are from the Esparza clan, she is including me.”

This is a story of courage and will, plus the desire to succeed in order to better help her family, her community, and her Nation.  It is a story for all Rotarians to consider when they are advising young people to study and to develop their minds because to learn is to grow.  Once you have accomplished this, then you can give and glow.

Difficulty & Uncertainty Bring Blessings

Speaker: Jerry Traylor
Date: Sep 13, 2010

Born with cerebral palsy, Jerry faced physical pain and loneliness that few children ever know. Yet it was this early difficulty that drew others to Jerry in caring and love. Others empowered Jerry to set goals and achieve greatness even in his imperfection. His example compels many to look at their own lives and take positive action.

On crutches, Jerry has: Skied down Colorado mountains; competed in 35 full-length marathons; parachuted from an altitude of 12,500 feet; climbed to the 14,110-foot top of Pike s Peak; participated in 16 dance marathons for charity; and jogged 3,528 miles from San Francisco to New York City.

In his national radio broadcast, The American Character, the late Dr. Norman Peale summed up Jerry s influence this way: "Building a career as a motivational speaker, Jerry Traylor has prepared himself by becoming a motivational doer: That way he is more convincing when he tells people what it takes to achieve difficult goals for they know he has achieved many.

Jerry is an active member of our eClub, and we proudly welcome his as our speaker this week.
