The Brookwood Community

Speaker: Gary Mathews
Date: Apr 12, 2010

This week, Gary Mathews of The Brookwood Community near Houston, Texas, tells us about the variety of programs that they provide to adults with a variety of challenges.  In addition to giving these adults dignity and the opportunity to live among friends, Brookwood involves the larger community in ways that bring forth the humanity of those our society would regard as "normal."

You are invited to learn how a dream for a few special children to have fulfilling lives became a community success for many, many families through this story.

The Shoebox Project

Speaker: Bill Smale
Date: Apr 05, 2010

Having the opportunity to see the smiles of children and the thanks of those in need is one special component of participating actively in a Rotary project.  A member of the Rotary eClub of the Southwest USA, Bill Smale, was able to see much of the evolution of a project that developed out of friendships and a genuine interest in others.  Sit back and enjoy Bill's story of kids, food, and friendship!

Hubli, Then and Now

Speaker: Ray Myers
Date: Mar 22, 2010

This week's program is a story of how things do and don't change over time.  Ray Myers, a member of the Office of Educational Technology in the U.S. Department of Education, was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Hubli in the state of Karnataka in the late 1960s.  In 2008, he had the chance to return to India, and today he shares that story with us.

His return was made possible in part by the efforts of the Deshpande Foundation, which is known for its work in innovation, entrepreneurship and international development.  Please take the time to learn more about their efforts at: http://www.deshpandefoundation.org/

A Pinch of Salt

Speaker: Dr. Vimal Hemani
Date: Mar 15, 2010

Dr. Vimal Hemani is our Service Project Chair this year. Last week he journeyed to the Little Desert of Guajart, India to see the beginnings of our windmill that benefits the salt workers there.

Vimal tells the story better than I do, so without further ado, I present Vimal Hemani, and "A Pinch of Salt".
