Endings and Beginnings
Speaker: President Larry Levenson
Date: Jun 28, 2010
Like most things, we didn't know how it would end. At our installation event last June, Charter President Judy Taunt said, “It's a year of change, the ending of a cycle and the beginning of a new cycle.” It was an exciting year, with many surprising turns in the road.

American Education: A Social Change Story
Speaker: Dr. Martha Kanter
Date: Jun 21, 2010
We are honored this week to have Dr. Martha Kanter, the United States Under Secretary of Education, speak to us about President Obama's goals for American public education.
Dr. Kanter, a Rotarian since 1994, has a long history of service to the under-served. She began her work in the 1970s as a high school teacher in alternative programs in Massachusetts and New York, and went on to establish the first program for students with learning disabilities at San Jose City College in California. She eventually rose to the position of chancellor of the Foothill-DeAnza Community College District, one of the largest in the nation, where she served until being nominated to the position of under secretary of education in 2009. (full bio at http://www2.ed.gov/news/staff/bios/kanter.html)
Here is how she describes her Rotary beginnings:
"I was privileged to join the Cupertino Rotary Club in 1994 in my first year as president of De Anza College, the local community college serving 25,000 students in the heart of Silicon Valley. Don Allen, the Club’s president, and Jim Walker whose children had all graduated from De Anza and led successful careers in their communities. Both Don and Jim served as Club Presidents and went on to become Rotary Governors in subsequent years. They were role models to me for 'Service above Self.'"
With a special interest in technology (she opened the first Advanced Technology Center in California's community college system), Dr. Kanter is certainly an appropriate person to speak to the members and guests of our eClub. In your comments following the presentation, please feel free to share your thoughts on what you read with Dr. Kanter and the RECSWUSA community.

The Gardens at Idylwood: "Harvesting Health"
Speaker: Tanya Ahern
Date: Jun 14, 2010
This year, the Rotary eClub of the Southwest USA has presented a number of programs about innovative efforts to help those in American society who are among the most vulnerable. This week, a Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Santa Clara (California) tells about a program at the care facility where she works that was inspired by and is helping the residents there, a story that speaks to the power of life and livelihood on multiple levels.
Our speaker, Tanya Ahern, is someone I got to know in that Rotary club, where I served before my work schedule changed and I moved to our online club. In Santa Clara, I came to admire Tanya's dedication to getting a job done, her heart for others, and the kindness of both her words and actions. It is her hope that what she presents today might work as a model for other care facilities searching for ways to bring purpose and hope to their residents.

East Side Heroes
Speaker: Enrique Flores
Date: Jun 07, 2010
This week's speaker is Enrique Flores, the founder of a San Jose, California-based nonprofit called East Side Heroes. Enrique has devoted seven years to helping young people in the neighborhoods where he grew up realize their academic potential through scholarships to top high schools. His service recently earned him the Santa Clara University Alumni Association's 2010 Ignatian Award. This award is given to recognize alumni who live the SCU ideals of competence, conscience, and compassion, and who have been a credit to the Alumni Association and the University through outstanding service to humanity.
The program will tell you about East Side Heroes, with quotes from those who have worked with Enrique, affirming his commitment to young people seeking to find something better in their lives. In the beginning of the program, there is a link to a five-minute interview of Enrique and two of his scholarship students, which I hope you will take time to watch. Once done, you may need to click "back" on your browser to return to the program.

Global Networking Groups of Rotary
Speaker: Jack Selway
Date: May 31, 2010
June is Fellowships month. But it's not just a few Rotary Fellowships anymore. . . as eClub member Jack Selway explains, the Rotary Fellowships program belongs to a new parent entity known as Global Networking Groups. The new entity includes groups of individual Rotarians organized to focus on shared topics of interest on an international basis, for fun and fellowship, and for focused action. RAGs and Fellowships -- there's a lot here for all of us to learn!
Jack Selway is not only a member of the Rotary eClub of the Southwest USA, he is also the founder of the now-nearly-ten-years-old Rotary Global History Fellowship. For anyone who values Rotary history, Jack deserves a special place in your heart! With the other founding members of RGHF, he has helped create a veritable museum for Rotary on the web, and you are certainly encouraged to visit this site at http://www.rghf.org when you can.
This week, Jack introduces the wealth and variety of fellowship opportunities available to members of Rotary. Didn't know there was a group for those who love canoeing and another for those who appreciate dolls? You'll know much more after reading this week's program!
