Ethics Has Gotten a Bad Rap! - Character vs Conscience

Speaker: Linda Williams
Date: Sep 24, 2007

Linda Williams is a co-founder of The Williams Institute for Ethics and Management (TWI), a nonprofit corporation established in 1993 to take ethics to a new level. The thoughts and concerns that led to the development of TWI were taking shape seven years prior to its actual creation. Linda was working in a policy position at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC, when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded on January 28, 1986, at 11:39 AM EST—73 seconds into its flight—killing all seven crew members. This moment stands out as a vivid experience that led many to “rethink” how we approach organizational decision making. Immersed in analysis related to questions of ethics surrounding the Challenger disaster until her resignation from NASA in June 1988, Linda decided to change direction in her career. She realized that her undergraduate and graduate degrees in business did not adequately equip her to make some of the tough decisions related to ethics. She returned to school in 1990 and earned a PhD in ethics and public policy from the Arizona State College of Law and Social Sciences with the intent to form a nonprofit corporation that could assist decision makers in addressing the kinds of ethical issues they are faced with every day.

Not Just for the News – What the Red Cross Does Every Day in Your Town

Speaker: Karen Naranjo
Date: Sep 17, 2007

Hmmm . . . I joined Rotary in January of 2001 and was secretary of the Phoenix Arcadia Rotary Club until I became the charter President Elect of Recswusa. (Do you know – that may be only ribbon I've never seen at a District Conference, "Charter President Elect".) I have spent a lot of time volunteering, especially in the last 10 years. These days I'm trying to volunteer smarter, not harder.

A Beginner's Guide to Effective Email

Speaker: Stephen Shearin
Date: Sep 03, 2007

I'm sure a lot of you are thinking 'I send plenty of email, and I've heard these things before' but before you discount this program either for your own sense of what you know or because it was originally authored in 1999, consider the last time you got an email that made go 'Hmmmmmmm.' At the very least, no one who attends today's meeting can ever claim that they were unaware of the potential repercussions of their email.... Our speaker today is Kaitlin Duck Sherwood aka Ducky, aka Kate Sherwood, aka Kaitlin Duck Sherwood --In her Professional life she: Is proud of the two books I wrote: Overcome Email Overload with Eudora 5 and Overcome Email Overload with Microsoft Outlook 2000 and Outlook 2002. Is currently working on an MS in Computer Science at the University of British Columbia with Gail Murphy. I'm researching programmer productivity. Has worked in a lot of places doing an awful lot of things in the high-tech industry. I'm not actively looking for work at the moment, but will probably start my search in the fall of 2007. --Personal Stuff In her personal life, she: * Runs a blog * Runs the syntaxerrors wikis * Lives at Green College * Developed web pages, including: a U.S. Census Bureau / Google Maps mashup, Mapeteria (a service to make generating heatmaps easier), humor, advice and the award-winning (but now defunct) car lots * Was Host/Writer/Crew of the High Tech Heroes and Parents, Families, and Friends community access TV shows * Designed stuff (Furniture, household implements, drawings, Halloween costumes) * Successfully proposed to and married the beautiful and talented Jim DeLaHunt Read through this piece. It's not nearly so long as it appears as I kept all the copyright info (none of which I violated I might add!) If you would prefer to read it online, you can go to http://www.webfoot.com/advice/email.top.php but you will have to click on the pdf to be able to finish the meeting. If you are one who prints, it is 41 pages.
