Congratulations! You won the lottery.

Speaker: Gil Gillenwater
Date: Jul 31, 2006

I met Gil in a Spanish class in 1992.  Since that time I have watched first hand as Rancho Feliz and the associated programs have grown touching the lives of many.  You would describe Gil as adventurous, amongst other things.  His quest for physical adventure has led him all over the world.  Next month he will be climbing Kilimanjaro with Darol Kubacz, a friend that, though he cannot walk, does not consider himself to be challenged.  Read more Darol and the group of disabled veterans that will make the ascent here: http://www.uhuruascent.com/ as a preview of next week's meeting.  His quest for spiritual adventure led him to Agua Prieta, about which you will learn more in this program.  Sitting well fed and content in his home in Scottsdale, he asked himself if this all there was to life, and true to his nature went in search of the answer.  For any of you that have heard Cliff Dochterman's 'When did you become a Rotarian', you could well think of Gil.  He embodies much of the spirit of Rotary, working tirelessly to assist those that have been less fortuanate in life than he.  He is no stranger to Rotary.  Tempe South has raised money and taken several teams to the orphanage as well as working with the club in Agua Prieta on international projects.
It's a great honor to introduce Gil Gillenwater as our speaker this week.  You can learn more at www.ranchofeliz.com.  I would like to finish this intro by offering their philosophy.

As amazing and successful as our United States economy is, many people here have a difficult time maintaining a sense of value for all thatthey have been blessed with. The most common result is a general sense of dissatisfaction and alienation, a lack of purpose with lives thatseem weighted and unfulfilled. As a result, millions of Americans arestarving for greater meaning while surrounded by one of the mostaffluent lifestyles in human history.

Meanwhile, 200 miles south of Phoenix, Arizona, the border town of AguaPrieta suffers the worst kind of material poverty. Unfortunately, thecity's abandoned children and vulnerable elderly people bear the bruntof this misery.

Rancho Feliz has created an innovative program that addresses thepoverty found on both sides of the border - from the physical povertyof Mexico, to the spiritual poverty that permeates our own culture.
Rancho Feliz believes that philanthropy is most effective when eachparty gives to the other and when both parties are actively involved inthe exchange. We call this operating philosophy "reciprocal giving" -- givers become receivers and receivers become givers. At Rancho Feliz we view this as "enlightened self-interest". We feed our souls by servingothers.

LiveCAREfully... The Importance of Caring in a Life of Significance.

Speaker: Jerry Traylor
Date: Jul 24, 2006

Our program this week is from our own Jerry Traylor.  Please follow the link to his website to learn more and to purchase his book or invite him to speak to your group.  He is motivational, inspirational, and a true Rotarian.
Over the past thirty years Jerry Traylor has inspired over one million individuals in 49 states and abroad ranging from industry giants like IBM and DuPont to the smallest partnership. In addition, He speaks at many conferences focusing on issues such as Sales, Customer Service and Quality Assurance as well as many programs for our youth. Over one million individuals have heard his message.
Jerry talks about the ability we all have to make a positive contribution in our workplace, school and society. Rather than simply giving a talk Jerry will challenge us; creating a feeling, a new way of thinking that will empower us to action; that will prompt us to do whatever it takes to meet the needs of each customer and provide a quality product or service.
Jerry has been featured in the national media including, Paul Harvey's radio broadcast, "The Rest of the Story" and the "Larry King Show.
The late motivational guru, Dr. Norman Vincent Peale referred to Jerry on a national radio broadcast saying, "Building a career as a motivational speaker, Jerry Traylor has prepared himself by becoming a motivational doer: That way he is more convincing when he tells people what it takes to achieve difficult goals --- for they know he has achieved many."
During his successful "Run Across America", Jerry was hosted by Rotary Clubs who initiated projects benefiting the elderly and disabled individuals in communities he ran through. Jerry has addressed numerous Rotary functions, most recently the International RYLA convention in Sweden.
Jerry recently authored a book titled, "LiveCAREfully... The Importance of CARING in a Life of Significance." Sales have been very good... over 3000 copies so far in over 30 countries. The book can be purchased on Jerry's website at www.jerrytraylor.com or ordered directly from Jerry at (480) 837-9408.
Jerry is a member of the Rotary e club of the Southwest and resides in Fountain Hills, Arizona

Liz Levenson

Speaker: Introduction of /by our Rotary Exchange Student
Date: Jul 17, 2006

As many of you may know, I was an exchange student some years ago.  I can speak from personal experience regarding the benefit of Rotary Youth Exchange.  RYE is the only program that Rotarian's family's can partake in.  If you are not familiar with it, become so at http://www.rotary.org/programs/youth_ex/students/about.html .  It's never too early to start the process for someone you think would be a good candidate.
This week, meet our outbound RYE student, Liz Levenson.  If you are lucky enough to meet her in person you immediately know that she is well prepared to enjoy the potential fruits of an exchange.  She is the daughter of fellow eClubbers Larry & Beth Levenson (Prescott, Arizona USA).  The Levensons have hosted three exchange students over the last few years, and they inspired both kids to apply to become exchange students. Ben was an exchange student to western Australia in 2002. Liz will be keeping us updated while she is gone, so read through her intro and get to know our first outbound exchange student now so you can better enjoy her coming updates. And if your travel plans call for passing through Vienna, be sure to look her up! Only two hours outside of Vienna, in Tencin, Slovakia!
Don't forget to return to the meeing page and press the 'Finish Meeting' button to get credit for attending this week.
Now, meet Liz!

Why I am a Rotarian?

Speaker: Rodney Mazinter
Date: Jul 10, 2006

Rodney Mazinter resides in Cape Town, South Africa, Rotary District 9350 with his enchanting wife Mavis, herself very accomplished in her own right.  He is celebrating his 30th year in Rotary.  If you google 'Rodney Mazinter rotary' you will get about 60 links that detail his achievements that include every position of club service, many postions at the District level, and several International appointments.  He was introduced to Rotary by a good friend, Graham Gordon, and soon made many new friends.  When queried, it is clear that for all the high profile responsibilities he's approached with vision and vigor, the friendships he has and still enjoys locally and worldwide are amongst the most valued experiences.
To go to even a shallow depth introducing our speaker would take more space than we have here, but I can tell you that he is a regular editorial contributor to the local newspaper, has a championship waterpolo cup named in his honor (himself once a member of the national team), an avid collector of interesting facts, an outstanding public speaker, superb humorist, husband, father, and grandfather, and generally speaking, a fellow you would want to have in your lifeboat.
It is with great pleasure that I introduce our guest speaker; my former host father and a man I respect and cherish as a friend, Mr. Rodney Mazinter.

What is an eClub and how can it exist?

Speaker: Stephen Shearin
Date: Jul 03, 2006

Here we are, our third year as a chartered Rotary club.  Yet there still remain some who question whether eClub is a viable notion.  As sure as you read these words it is viable.  In a recent Rotarian Magazine, several rotarians were interviewed regarding this question.  They all had valid points, pro and con, but as one might expect, those that are not familiar with eClub are less prone to realize its value, or even recognize it as being a means by which true Rotary fellowship could exist.
I am pleased to say yes, it can.  We have in our club members from Japan, the South Pacific, all across the US, and into South Africa.  We talk by phone, exchange email, meet in person, and discuss topics on an Internet forum.  We share photos, hopes, joys, sorrows, and well wishes.  There perhaps exists the ability to know more detail about a fellow eClubber than one might ever know about a friend in a terra club (aka Fork and Knife, Flesh and Bones, or Cyber Challenged clubs.)

We are free to assist local Rotary clubs when and where we can.  As such, we are Rotary mercenaries if you will.

As the first meeting for this Rotary year, I wanted to revisit some of the reasons that I felt it worthwhile to get involved with eClub.  I have been passionate about Rotary for over two decades, and involved with the Internet for more than one.  The Internet is very real and very powerful.  Imbuing it with the Spirit of Rotary can only lead to great things and  I for one am excited to watch it take form and come to life around us.
