The Southwest

Took a much needed vacation recently - the old fashioned way! We drove from Phoenix, AZ to Idaho Springs, CO (if you're unfamiliar, its on I-70 on the way up to Golden, CO).
We had a lovely drive, stopping to be "tourists" and visiting old friends. We managed to watch the fireworks in 58 degree weather - which was quite fun considering Phoenix was 116 that day! We also toured the wine vineyards in Palisides and Grand Junction and brought home a few good treasures from there as well. Driving back, we took some great pictures in Utah (Moab), Arizona (Monument Valley), and actually drove past Arizona's Mormon Lake as the forest fire took off! Nothing like driving down the interstate with the bucket helicoptors passing overhead!
It was a lovely rejuvinating trip and I'll post some pictures as soon as I get them transferred from my camera. It was quite fun to take an old fashioned car trip and go with no agenda or plans, just wandering for 10 days where the whim took us!

You remind me of a time when part of the excitement of taking a trip was taking the trip,m not just arriving at a destination - the "glamour" of staying in a motel, the fun of taking a road without knowing exactly where it went, the discoveries you made you weren't even looking for.
Not possible in a plane, and not likely on a train, but in a car? You carry your world with you - we always had a cooler with sandwiches and drinks - you set your own schedule.
You have set off a whole series of memories I haven't dusted off in a long time. Thank you.

My daughter (11 yrs old) and I took a trip to Washington DC his summer. Embarassing to say that this was my first time. I have visited more countries then states. Hope to change that and expand that !!
Our experience with the first hotel (being generous with that label) was horrendous - but being the troopers we are (she is the BEST traveller) we plugged on and moved to a safer hotel (when the registration desk is behind bullet proof glass - it is a sign to MOVE ON!!)
Fr. John - I did not know you were a SCUBA diver !!! - have been certified myself for about 17 yrs

Yup I've been diving for years - but started back in the days when all you really neeeded was a tank and a mask and flippers. Didn't know anything about crtification -
so I've only been certified a couple of years - but made my first dive back in the early 60's

Father John -
I didn't know you were a diver either! My you do travel the world - above and below the surface :-)
We did have the ceremonial cooler in the car - snacks and drinks! And, we even stopped for ice cream along the routes! It did bring back memories for us and we had the best time being nomads - and we've decided to make it an annual event and explore new travels at our leisurely pace.

Well, Southwest and then some. In mid March we head from Santa Fe to Guadalajara MX on the way to Rotary Project Amigo at the base of the twin volcanos of Colima. Then after a suitable respite (April and May) we take a group of two dozen Rotarians to Machu Picchu and Peru and then Galapagos Islands and Ecuador on the way to the 2008 RI Convention in Los Angeles. Have to force ourselves to spend a week in the wine country to recover from all that travel. : )

Not only do we carry our life with us, we carry our home, a motohome. We left Southwest (New Mexico) to spend a month in Tucson. What a wonderful life. To meet so many people and see so much of our wonderful country.
