eClub Forum and English

eClub Forum and English

Posted: 3 years ago

No one said English was easy!

With an eClub, you have members all over the world and English is not, in all households, the primary language but it is when we are doing business and communicating with each other in our eClub called Rotary eClub of the Southwest, USA. Therefore here is a lighter side to the problems with this language, English.

We must polish the Polish furniture.

He could lead if he would get the lead out.

The farm was used to produce produce.

The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.

The soldier decided to desert in the desert.

This was a good time to present the present.

A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.

When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.

I did not object to the object of your affections.

The insurance was invalid for the invalid.

The bandage was wound around the wound.

There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.

They were too close to the door to close it.

The buck does funny things when the does are present.

They sent a sewer down to stitch the tear in the sewer line.

To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.

The wind was too strong to wind the sail.

After a number of injections my jaw got number.

Upon seeing the tear in my clothes I shed a tear.

I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.

How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend.

And much of what we speak and write from the USA is not English but American. We seem to create new language all the time. It is an American trait to look forward. When will we ever learn that “Life’s rearview mirror is always clearer than the windshield.” Europe and Asia see daily through the rearview mirror. History is easier to see, in language or reality, than what comes next. But Americans are adventurers; therefore they will not buy an “old” language, called English, unless it is “New and Improved.” Well, new and improved is what our website and forum are now. How many are really using it, whatever language is used?
