Is any body there?
Posted: 4 years ago
I like being in this experimental, and hopefully permanent, eClub. But, my question is "is there any body there?"
I'm here. :-)
I also have completed all the available meetings - except the last two that were "dark". I would assume that that was not intentional. I notified Secretary Jono that we appear to be dark. Our main person for web work - Stephen - is on vacation these past two weeks so maybe he didn't' see it...
I think much of the board action (which is very short and perfunctory) is done non-publically. There are groups on the board here where we are participating. There was a selection committee made to recommend future officers but I don't think recommendations were provided. From the outside it might seem like a show of hands was the method used but it is a tad bit more formal than that. Some positions were filled by twisting the arm of the current holder to remain in (I offered, no arm twisting here)
Since I was a founder of this club, and it is also the only club I have participated in, I have no other club experience to compare to.
I do know this - many people joined this club because they could not successfully participate in a non-eclub format. To me that means they have little spare time as they can't arrange their schedules to do one set thing at the same time each week. It seems to follow (at least to me), that these same people would have little time available to actively participate in an eclub format as well. I don't think we will see a massive change any time soon. :-(
I have always been a director or officer, and this is just the way things have been done. This year has much more organization, but much less communication than past years. Unless something is broken (or someone is complaining loudly) not much is being done behind the scenes. For example, in response to a line of discussion discussing authorizing paying for certain officers trips to the annual RI event, I offered to write up a Travel and Expense Reimbursement policy that we could vote on that would cover that topic and cover dealing with all the random (how do I get reimbursement for this expense? questions I receive as Treasurer) - my offer had one caveat - the board had to vote if they wanted me to do it or not before I expended the effort. I received zero comments back and no vote was taken.
So, while we have people that want to participate, it's hard to get traction from others in the group.
I do suggest that you keep trying to stir up conversation! ;-)

As new members Tom and I are sometimes uncertain how to proceed, but have the time for involvement. We travel but generally every day or two we take a look the forums and chat room. Many times there is not much new, and we feel a bit reluntant to start things. Carol

I'm out here, but being new to RECSWUSA I'm still finding my way around. Any suggestions that will help me get into the swing of things?

I am afraid that Darin is correct in his assessment. It has been difficult and discouraging to see only 3 or 4 people participating in the forums. I have personally cut back on my own postings because I have gotten discouraged! I hope that people will find the time to at least say "hello" from time to time.

Most of us have input at the end of the meetings, but it is not posted in a forum, that I know. Discussion and comments on the weekly meeting maybe one way to get members to participate. Carol

This is the hello and how you doing for all of who really want to be a part of the eClub. Tom and I are looking forward to our visit to Arizona, later this month and hope to meet with some of you.
Please don't get discouraged, if it were not for members like you, none of the new members would even have a clue as to how and why we post. I like the forum approach so that several can participate.

Thanks Carol for being there. In my opinion, this is all it takes! It is nice to see people come in on a regular basis and say hello! it also helps to have a picture and real names I believe that the main reason that we have forums is for us to get to know each other better and to share our own lives with others. Thanks again!

A visiting Rotarian from Livingston Texas wrote this after this week's meeting:
The importance of filing bills that will keep eClubs viable after 2010, and the 17 new members to the club. You're right, putting a name to a face is very important. Our club in Livingston is about 60 strong.
Bravo and thanks for your support. Our faces and names are all we have on the internet.
More full names and a few faces are still missing and needed if we are to get acquainted beyond the Valley of the Sun. Jack Selway

As a Newbie to Rotary, I am still trying to find where the little girl's room is, but I'm getting there. I am still learning the nuances of the club, not to mention all the acronyms. Are you sure the Rotary is not a part of the military?
I really enjoyed the 01/21/08 thru 01/28/08 meeting. Not only did I get the lyrics to one of my favorite songs, "It's a Wonderful World." I now have the list of acronyms that I sorely needed to understand what's what in Rotary. :-)
The Bios posted in the 01/21/08 meeting really helped me to get better connected with my fellow Rotarians. Maybe we ought to spotlight a Rotarian each week. What do you think? Of course, we should give everyone ample time to do this as we are all very busy folks.
Frank, thank you for taking the time to share with everyone your personal story. It was very intersesting.
In any event, I do plan on getting more involved.
BTW, this is my first posting as a Rotarian. I guess we all have to start sometime.
Have a great Rotary week everyone.

Mamie,
Great to have you in our eClub and thanks for posting some comments on our forums. I believe that this is the only way that we will get to know each other better. I agree with you that we should hear everyone´s personal stories and that is why I urged everybody to tell us such things as why they became a Rotarian or what motivates them to continue in Rotary. Maybe, now we will hear from more people.
Thanks for your comments! What a Wonderful World is also one of my favorite songs! Hope to meet you in LA

Regarding the LA Convention, I noticed in the information from the 01/21/08 - 01/28/08 meeting that that I would help with the convention. I don't see any problems with this, except that I didn't know that I had committed myself to be a part of the "help" team. Just let me know what I need to do, and I will do what I can to help.
Again, as a Newbie, I am totally unfamiliar with any of this. However, I am a willing student. Therefore, any information from seasoned Rotarians would be welcome.
