Phishing mails, an important issue for club

Phishing mails, an important issue for club

Posted: 2 years ago

Dear All,

In past 2 months, I got 2 messages from two different profiles from our club asking about my name and all the details to become her/his friend as they liked my profile...!!

One of the profile is http://www.recswusa.org/view_profile/mid/4071

My point here is... Is there any way to check the profile before someone can sign up our club site? I think only Rotarians can be allowed to sign up and permitted to enter the site after confirmation of their authenticity.

What are your views?

Best regards,

Vimal

Vismal,

I agree with your concern. I believe that our information should be for club members only. Through Rotary, credentials are checked and Membership is approved and to me that means that friendships that are developed through the eClub are safeguarded because we are Rotarians. Otherwise how can we be confident that the friendship of an unknown person who writes us is not a fraud. I witnessed an online friendship that was a fraud and it really hurt a dying person that was very close to me. I also know young people who write to anyone in the country and who receive letters from people throughout the country. Unfortunately, they really don't know anything about the people they are writing to and the people that are writing to them. All of them only know what they read and how do they really know that what they are reading is not a total lie.

Thanks for bringing this topic to our attention.

Yours In Rotary,

Eileen

This is an important topic and one that can be easily over-looked by those of us who have dealt with it almost daily for several years.

FIrst and foremost I want to say that no one can see your personal data except other eClub members.  This means only your basic page is available to non-club members.  Nextly, you can set the security so only people you have included as friends can see your page.

The problem with this sort of thing is that you allow others to dictate your behavior.  In truth, a scammer could gain access to a terra club, posing as a prospect, and then gather business cards and pursue their crime. True it's less anonymous, but it is also more personal when done in person.

Protecting yourself online is important business but easy to do. Don't click 'yes' on anything without knowing what it is and who it is from.  Same goes for adding people to your 'friends' list or responding to unknown messages or emails.

As for locking down the site, we have had fewer than five breaches in over four years, and even those were laughably simple and obvious (like janebaby.) That account is deactivated (has been for some time) and adding layers of security I fear would only discourage people from attending and or making an account for easy return attendance, two things we struggle to have happen.

Thanks again for bringing this up, and please comment here or contact me directly if you have additional concerns regarding these matters.
