Powerful Programs and Rotary (Q&A for the program of July 13, 2009)

Posted: 1 year ago

Hello, all!

This thread is to allow those who might have questions about this week's program, called "Powerful Programs and Rotary."  If you are reading this thread on or after July 20th, 2009, there is a different current program, and you may have to wait until the speaker, Rushton Hurley, notices the new post.

Feel free to leave questions, and you can always contact a RECSWUSA member directly by going to the "Members" tab above, clicking on the name of the person you wish to contact, and sending a private message through RECSWUSA's system.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
Rushton

One of the key things I see in your program, Rushton, is that we should speak or write our program just as if we were standing in front of a room of 60 Rotarians.

I know in my own writing that there are lots of different "tones" I could take. . . formal, serious, light, flip, sassy, etc. Bets if I writie just like I would talk to you in a group setting. Thanks for making this so clear.

Thanks, Larry.

I think it is surprising to guests how warm an eClub can be, though a look through the forums would certainly give one a clue.  A recent one, for example, shows that Stephen was able to find a place in New York City - no small feat, and congratulations!

I certainly agree that tone in writing lends itself to goodwill and better friendships in the eClub.  I enjoy reading the good words that we have for each other.

If I wrote like I lecture to my classes, it would be filled with little repetitive turns and backward asides, which when you are thinking on your feet is appropriate. But some of us think in words, think in paragraphs, compose our thoughts to support some adventure,  that should hold together as a coherent idea, leading somewhere and showing the process of thought that went into the presentation. A work of art is both the 'work' which is the embodiment of the the process and the 'art' which is the process itself. On the Internet, you can do both...and our eClub should.

I agree that there are times when we should write like we talk but that is not the total human being (and the Internet, unlike the statement of a thought in front of group of people or in front of one person, is a more complicated vehicle, therefore we have Twitter and Facebook and eMails and websites and....). Just as there are more than one way to approach anything we say or write, there are multiple people with personalities in our eClub who must attempt to find the way that they communicate best in a variety of styles (which are learned through reading a variety of approaches).

Again, this is agreeing that some things that are presented should be in 'talk think' but others should be edited, clarified, analyzed and presented only after a thorough examination of the whole (a kind of 'mind think' of an ideate- idea/image). I am in favor of multiple approaches to how we present materials.

We have that now if one reads all the approaches in our Forum.  The Forum, as Stephen has guided it, is a master work in how to use mulitple approaches to communicate many different ideas and images. For new people coming into our eClub, a journey, led by a mentor, through the approachs in our Forum would be useful for them to learn that there is 'not one way to communicate, but many'.

TALK-THINK-WRITE-KNOW.

This is good work. I'd like to see more of these discussions. I have no questions for today, just my appreciation.

Interesting discussion. Certainly we want to help members and guests feel comfortable and less intimidated by the methods, and more appreciative of the opportunities our meetings and forums provide for both service and fellowship.
