Are we really International?
Posted: 2 years ago
We have over 50 members from 16 different countries and 6 different continents. Does this make us really international? I have noticed that our new website cannot accept different accents from other languages. If your last name is García it comes out as something like: Garc4¿=a. We need to realize that Spanish accents (as well as accents in other languages) are an important part of the spelling system of that language. If we are not able to apply accents on certain names, it is the same as misspelling the name. I certainly would not be happy if my name would appear as Mongoria instead of Longoria, simply because the system could not allow for a correct spelling! I am sure that our international friends feel the same. We need to fix our website so that it will really represent the international nature of Rotary.

Hello, I am a french Rotarian and ready to create the first french speaking eclub N°1 ; so I am visiting your eclub for seeing how you are managing with a eclub, how are your meetings and so on. I will be in Montreal in June and would be glad to meet some of you for talking about your eclub. I would like to become a member ...I will fill the application form...I know AZ, I have been there three times, I attended the 3 day in Phoenix,( poor feet!) 3 years ago, I jumped from 13000 feet at Eloy last december and my best american friend is the governor elected 2012-2013 ( Marana) . So, I already know all of you...I am joking! see you soon! Yours in Rotary. Françoise Thiebault Roger

Hello, Françoise. We hope to get to know you better in the future. It is a great idea that you are thinking of forming the first French-speaking eClub. My wife and I have traveled in France on several occasions, but unfortunately, we are getting to the age where it becomes a bit more difficult. I also lived in Amboise for one summer. I remember that I loved the area and visited many of the beautiful castles in that area. We also love Paris, and, of course, French food. I am sorry to say that we will not be going to Montreal, but we do plan to go to New Orleans the following year. During the summer, we are planning a river cruise from Moscow to St Petersburg. Take care!

Hi Arnold and Franck, That is great to receive your two notes! Thank you so much! Do you know if somebody from you eclub is going to Montreal? Do you think that it is a good idea to join your club, waiting for my own eclub?
May be you could tell me what to do and what not to do when we are in a eclub. . What is the best for acting ; do you have a meeting with all the members in the same time or do you go on the your website when you are free, chose a project, give money and say hello to everybody? Is the best to fill ma apply form?
I will go to New Orleans next year.
I live in Tours, very near Amboise( 12 miles) ; you are right, it is a nice small city on the Loire with a beautiful castle, Le Clos Lucé where died Leonardo da Vinci.
Yours in Rotary.

Well, Françoise, you are doing all of the right things for our eClub, and, in my opinion, you should fill out the application as soon as possible because you have already visited 3 times, and you are staying in touch with some of the members, etc. The reason that I say that you are doing the right things for our eClub, is that we need members like you who are willing to communicate with other members, and whose presence is felt from time to time in our forums, etc. In my opinion, you would make a great member! Then, in the future, you could see about forming a French-Speaking eClub. We have about 8 members from Monterrey, Mexico who had already dropped Rotary because they could not attend the meetings. Now they form a "working group" of Rotarians who work on projects and have their own meetings in Monterrey. However, they still attend our meetings and participate in our discussions because they are now members of our eClub. Eventually, they plan to form their own Spanish-Speaking eClub. You could do the same in France. Perhaps you could recruit other French Rotarians who can no longer attend the regular meetings, and start your own "French Working Group." Please talk to Larry about this possibility.

Hi Franck, Thanks for your last note. I just filled my form! Look forward joining you on the web! I gave the address of THE rotarian of my club who knows english! No choice! In France, about 20 Rotarians joined me for the eclub, but we have to wait for the new rules...and it probably will be long! Do you need my résumé( CV)? I will write to your president very soon. Have a great sunday and take care. Françoise.

Hi, Françoise,
It is great to know that you will be joining us on the web. I also thank you for filling out the form, and for expressing an interest in getting in touch with our President, Larry. I think that you will really enjoy belonging to our eClub, and I look forward to many more conversations with you. I am sure that Larry will soon appoint a mentor who will guide you through the process. Have a great day!

That is great Francoise!
It was wonderful meeting you and Frank at the convention! You are two wonderful people. Anywho, to comment on the topic of accents, I agree we should implement them into our site, such as the umlaut ü ä ö. Do you guys know of any German speaking eClubs?

Hello Kate,
Thank you very much for your so kind reply.
Today, I suggest a game to you: suppose we go to a meeting of our terra club to share a meal with our friends in the club. We sit at tables of 8 guests and we talk about ... our reading, our yards and flowers, the movies we have seen, children, parents, etc. ... I will invite other friends of our eclub to share our meal ... for telling everything they want to tell us. It will be a good way to know each other and will encourage us to read the bios of these friends . What do you think? And a week after another week, we will know everybody.I will ask Frank, Sherry and Beth that you already know and others I do not know yet. Today I want to say I'm reading "Soldier’s pay”, the first novel that William Faulkner wrote in NOLA, where I bought my copy in a very famous old bookshop.
I looked on a map where is Bethlehem (near…Nazareth!!!so funny!!!, in PA).I have been in PA, but only Philly and Lancaster and the Dutch country.
Have a good day, Kate! Friendly. Françoise

When we coming to the site of Recswusa, it is desirable to be allocated eight members at random automatically for each members. And we are asked to send mails to the eight members.Asking favorite things and service and so on to each member.

Hello Hiro,
Thank you so much for your reply. Today, I asked Sherry, Kate, Beth, Elisabeth , Carol, Paulo, Rafael, Ryofu, to join us for a "lunch meeting" for telling everything they want to tell us. Of course, welcome to you, Hiro! May be it would be better to create a special forum for these meetings...give me your opinion about that.

Hey!
Francoise! That idea for a 'lunch meeting' sounds great =) Where shall we 'meet'? I agree we should a forum for a weekly, lunch meeting or having a place we can drop a line in any conversations like this forum
(and hehe... I went to high school in Nazareth, PA and was born in Bethlehem =b)
Hiro, that is an excellent proposal. Connecting with multiple members can bring us all closer! =)

Well, I see some good signs! We seem to be becoming more and more international as we gain new members. In my opinion, this is the true nature of eClubs. This is the main way in which we can differentiate ourselves from "terra" clubs. As all of you know, we have members from 6 different continents. It is even more important now to make sure that our club applies the technology for writing accents in other languages. I have already mentioned before that accents are part of the spelling system of any particular language, and that not providing them would be like misspelling a name.
The other good thing that is happening is that we seem to be recruiting members who are willing to communicate. In my opinion, communication is absolutely vital to our survival. Now, members such as Gèrard, Françoise, Kate, Hiro, Larry, and others are taking up room in our forums. That is great news!
I also like Hiro´s idea of inviting 8 persons to lunch and sharing some of our own background, and the reasons that we have joined Rotary, etc. We have tried this before, and it has not worked. However, our eClub is definitely different than it was a few years ago. So cheers! Go for it!
