Economic condition's on our Planet Earth

Economic condition's on our Planet Earth

Posted: 9 months ago

We have 93 members in 11 countries on 6 continents. All of our nations economies are being affected by the poor financial condition we have let our Governments place us in world wide. Simply it boils down to spending more than you have.

As Rotarians and leaders in our communities it behoves each and everyone of us to become active in promoting sound fiscal policies by our Local, State and National governments. It makes no difference what your political affilation is, we are talking about the survival of Local, State and National Governments.

As Rotarians we have made a difference in the health, welfare, way of life and living conditions of many all over the Globe. Let us unite and use the same energy to help encourage our political leaders to work toward sound fiscal policy in every Nation we are in.

Brewer:  Very well said.  I would like to add that as Rotarians and leaders we need to step up to the plate and make sure our financial contributions to Rotary or other community and international service organizations are being used wisely and effectively to help solve many of the problems that are faced by the poor and disadvanraged around the World.  This is time for Rotary and Rotarians to shine.

It is interesting to hear the words "sound fiscal policy" as if it is a permanent way of acting, even in a time of change (and the one thing that is permanent in our world is "change"). Sound fiscal policy means, in a certain time in the world's fiscal crisis, each country looks at their own condition at that time and reacts with the best minds, acting in the best way, irregardless of their personal political agendas. This is not just my feeling but Pulitzer Prize Winning Economist Paul Krugman who stated this two years ago.

It is interesting too that "sound fiscal policy" must work, inside the USA, within  the basis of democracy (going back to the 'golden section' or 'golden mean' ideas that the Greeks started). Our system seems to work best when we go "middle of the road' in our actions (not too far right or too far left, but just off center, either side of center). It is what all of us in America learn as children, except then we called it Goldie Locks and the Three Bears. Actually that tale is based on 'the Golden Section and the Three Choices' (an adult version of the children's story). "Not too far left; not too far right; but just somewhere in the middle of the road of action" (whether it is political action or 'sound fiscal policy').

What is unnerving is that in times of crisis, too far left or right can be 'sound fiscal policy' in that critical moment (as long as we know that we must return to 'middle of the road' actions to sustain our democrady over the long run').

But what do I know? I am an artist/Rotarian who reads Krugman and other economists.
