Program: Auld Lang Syne and Hogmanay

Speaker: Carol Anderson

Carol Anderson and I (Rushton) give you a second week in a row of annual festivities with plenty of information on the famous song and the festival of which it's a part. At the end of this program, you will hopefully know how to pronounce the word "Hogmanay," be able to produce the proper Regiments response at this time of year to, "Who goes there?" and still be tingling from the rousing Kenneth McKellar version of Auld Lang Syne, an mp3 version of which is linked in the program. Enjoy!

Nice meeting. Good program. I particularly enjoyed Abraham's induction. Welcome to our eClub Abraham.

14/Jan/10, 5:40am

The program on Hogmanay had me going to YouTube and finding videos of Scottish Pipe Bands.  I love the pipe music and actually learned to play the pipes.  Now I'm learning to play golf.  That you can do on New Year's Day in Brazil.

Thanks, Carol and Rushton

Good Program

12/Jan/10, 9:40am

Loved the program - being of Scottish descent, our family began to celebrate Hogmanay several years ago.  Our particular brand of event begins with the sharing of libations with guests and culminates in a terrific bonfire.

This was a fun thought provoking program.

05/Jan/10, 1:45pm

Sounds like fun - if I were 20 or 30 years younger... As it is now, I don't think I would make it to 2 a.m., much less to the daylight hours of New Year's Day or beyond.

05/Jan/10, 7:32am

First time I have seen the lyrics of the whole song

04/Jan/10, 1:47pm

Hogmanay--what an interesting celebration of the New Year.  The first-footing tradition would be a lot of fun.  I think we'll try it next year, without the fireball swinging!  Thanks for a great end-of-year program.

Thank you for such an enjoyable meeting.  As the World Peace Scholar Chair for our club it was delightful to listen and watch the induction of a former peac e scholar into Rotary.  I intend to use him as an example when I speak to our club about the benefits of the peace scholar program.

I enjoyed Carol and Rushton's program program and now know so much more about our new year's traditions.

Happy New Year to all of you.

Very interesting.  I've read many things about Hogmanay without really understanding it so it was great to learn about it.  And, of course, we always sing "Auld Lang Syne" every year so this was a great reminder about what it means and where it came from.

For many years, we sang "Auld Lang Syne" during our last meeting of the year.  Our dear club member and song director passed away a few years ago, so we don't sing it as much.  I often wondered about the historical nature of this song.  I really enjoyed reading about it as well as hearing a true professional sing it.  Great program!

Hmmm.  You've given me a lot to think about in reviewing 2009.

One of the most helpful things our club accomplished in 2009 was to raise enough funds to send 60 kids, who otherwise would not have been able to afford it, to college for the 2009-2010 school year.

28/Dec/09, 5:23pm

A very compact program describing the origin of the popular version of "Auld Lang Syne", as well as a review of the Hogmanay tradition and its various offshoots. Hogmanay is the "Scots word for the last day of the year" and as a celebration traces its roots back to winter solstice observance by the ancient Norse. The Gaelic, Romans and Vikings had similar winter festivals. We learn that Hogmanay was characterized by much frivality, food, drink and gift giving. "First-footing" is a Hogmanay custom wherein the first person of the new year to cross the threshold of one's home is very significant and an occasion for celebration In a similar Greek tradition, this same practice of first footing may attach good or ill fortune for the householder in the upcoming year. Swinging fireballs at midnight is another Scottish custom. Citizens swing chain attached flaming "chicken wire" balls through the streets at midnight to blaze in the new year. Auld Lang Syne is printed in a traditional version; and is also presented in the more recognizable version "reinterpreted by Robert Burns" - which we sing today. Excellent and timely program. Happy New Year!
