Program: The Marine and Environmental Education Alliance

Speaker: Jeff Rosen
A pleasure of having a member of one's Rotary club present to the group is having the chance not simply to get to know that person better, but also to get a glimpse of what that member truly cares about. For Jeff Rosen, that passion lies in marine and environmental resources and education. In this week's program, Jeff tells us how he took this interest in his home of Massachusetts to another level.
Jeff Rosen is a scientist, statistician, oceanographer and drinking water specialist. He has been a consultant for over 35 years. He specializes in turning data into information that can support responsible decisions regarding the management of environmental resources. He joined Rotary in 2009 in hopes of applying his expertise to bring clean drinking water to more people around the world. He lives in Scituate, Massachusetts, with his wife and two children. He also volunteers as the chairman of the town's Water Resources Committee.

Its a wonderful thing to help those in need.
Great vid. Great program.
It has been said that water will be the resource issue of the 21st century, like oil was for the 20th. I'm glad there are people trying to develop environmentally sound solutions (unlike with oil).

Good program Jeff, the ecology and the use of natural and renewable energy is the future, instead of destroying or exhausting the non renewable.

I find these types of partnerships fascinating and wish Jeff and his cohorts the best of luck.
Although I live in Northeast Arkansas, I can identify with the need to develop skilled workers to take care of our land, water, & other resources. I consider the Delta farmland all around me and the Mississippi River, which is 50 miles away, and I know that Arkansas State University has made a push to study the farmland. I think involving students in the grade school level is a wonderful idea, as it may interest them in their choice of careers. I'd like to know where this program in Mass. is another two years, as far as their success rate.

3-11-2010The plans for obtaining tax-exempt status for the Marine and Environmental Education Alliance (MEEA) sound promising as does the goal of providing education for technicians who can carry out the work of serving as effective stewards of the land and sea near Scituate in the South Shore of Massachusetts Bay. Best wishes, Jeff!

Enjoyed the program about the Marine and Environmental Education Alliance. Being on the West coast, it is always interesting to here about activities on the East coast. Liked the overall meeting setup, with the various links to get more information, like the conflict in Nigeria and the Every Rotarian, Every Year newsletter.

Much is possible when community stakeholders come together to achieve a common goal. It's evident from Jeff's presentation that the team has had to overcome a number of obstacles however they appear to be well on track.
In addition, I like your new meeting format. It's easy to follow and allows for a number of additional interesting links.

As usual an excellent program. Nice to get to know one of your members better. Also, congratulations on your newest member.
Very good, as always - MY WIFES FAMILY STARTED IN SCITUATE. Walter Woodworth was born as Walter Woodward in Kent England in 1612. He came to America and he and his 5 sons did not want to be' ward of the king' and all changed to Woodworth. His farm was known for centuries as 'Walter Woodworth Hill' - HE died in 1686. When we drove in to town, we saw the 'Woodworth cemetary'. The nice lady at the Chamber of Commerce was not able to help us. - no names in the phone book etc. A book by Jeaneta Woodworth Behan l

WOW... I had no idea how much could be done by a group of people that are connected by the net!!! Kudos!!!
Good stuff, Jeff! I am reminded of the visit by a former RI president to the club I joined in Texas telling about visiting a village in Africa where Rotary had funded a well. A woman there told him she will never forget the day the well came, because that was "the day the children stopped dying." We have and can do so much.

Very interesting program. Great ideas to develop new technologies and new jobs.
Thank you for your very warm welcome to Rotary!
Program speaker Jeff Rosen introduced us to Marine and Environmental Education Alliance, Inc., (MEEA) an organization which began in 2008 as a result of efforts begun in January, 2007, by the Scituate Group. Seeking to develop a higher education program based upon the "marine and environmental heritage" of Massachusetts' South Shore, the Group formulated a vision to weave emerging technologies into the improved use and management of marine resources. With this in mind, a partnership between the Scituate Group and Massasoit Community College was forged to pursue educational certification for "marine technical skills". This work, combined with community meetings and promotion, led to the formation of the MEEA, which is presently "working on a number of critical initiatives" AND raising funds to construct a building. Good luck! Great concept and project!

We better start managing our marine resources correctly now for they are fast disappering.
What a great website and a super idea. I am in San Antonio Texas but seeing the map makes me want to trek northeastward. Thanks for making this makeup opportunity available. Dr joe dongieux joelynn40@yahoo.com
Some of our most interesting meetings are from our own members,I am very interested in alternative energy, here on our Cattle
Station in Australia we have moved from windpower to solar
for pumping stock water, but I still believe wind is a wonderful source of power to be further developed ,
good meeting Jeff
Nice to see a new Rotarian sharing his expertise with other Rotarians and having the tech background to make it easy to access. Program also related directly to our club's clean water project in Guatemala.
Being in education it was nice to see the partnership with the local community college for a new certificate programs that would fill both a regional need and a more global one as well.
This is a very interesting program. We are in a similar situation on the Southern Oregon Coast and can learn a lot from Scituate. I also used to live in Massachusetts and am familiar with the South Shore.

Good work Jeff!
I enjoyed meeting Joe Kagle, our pres.-elect last Saturday and even received change back, which with a little extra, I've donated back to the club.
Now it's time for my annual Rotary Foundation donation.
Sounds like a good program, wishing Jeff future success.
What an interesting program! The world is changing before our very eyes, and we must change right along with it. I hope that Mr. Rosen is successful in raising funds for the development and continuation of this program.
A very interesting initiative. I hope that the development plan/program succeeds.
I remember living in nature, growing up in a ranching family. I reveled in solitude in the timber country. We need to provide those experiences to all our young people. Looks like Joe's party was great. He's been a busy fellow this past few weeks, and more to come in Montreal as RI President Kenny has asked him to facilitate a breakout session on "Rotary's Global History." See RGHF at booth #2425.
